Area group means business—city needs to honor local olympians
By Kaustuv Basu
What do Kerri Walsh and Patricia Miranda have in common? They're both from Saratoga, and both won medals at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Walsh teamed with Misty May to take the gold medal in the beach volleyball competition, and Miranda won the bronze at 48 kg in women's wrestling.

In an effort to recognize the accomplishments of the two Olympians, some members of the Saratoga Business Development Council have suggested that an event or a function be held in their honor.

Brian Berg, secretary of the SBDC, first thought of the idea and then sent out an email message to fellow members and the Chamber of Commerce. The email suggested that a proper tribute could coincide with the city's popular Celebrate Saratoga! event.

"We have Celebrate Saratoga! coming up next month. It celebrates the best that the city has to offer. It would be a perfect place to honor these athletes," said Berg.

He said that it made sense to tie in the event with Celebrate Saratoga! so that it would be more of a draw for people.

"We can even decide to name the day in honor of the athletes," he said.

Berg's email set off a flurry of email responses supporting the idea. The electronic dialogue was similar to the discussions about many issues that merchants have had using the medium since its introduction last year. The process has made it possible for area business people to share ideas and concerns and discuss possible projects with the ease of a few keyboard strokes. Thus came the idea to honor the local Olympians.

Berg said that he believed that the city was also looking into a possible event to honor the athletes but nothing had been finalized yet.

Kristin Davis, executive director of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, said that she was open to any suggestions that the city might make when it came to honoring the athletes.

Walsh starred in basketball and volleyball at Mitty High School before going on to greatness on the volleyball court at Stanford University. She was a member of the women's U.S. Olympic volleyball team in 2000, but switched to beach volleyball after the Games when she teamed with May.

Miranda, like Walsh, was also a Stanford athlete. But the Saratoga High School graduate was forced to wrestle for the men's team on The Farm since there is no women's program there.
