City chips in to provide a new face for Saratoga's downtown
By Kaustuv Basu
The city wants to put a new face on downtown Saratoga, and a façade improvement program that started taking applications from businesses in July is part of the plan.

The city has received four applications so far and has just given out two awards to businesses on Big Basin Way—Uncorked, a wine shop, and Viaggios, a Mediterranean restaurant.

The program envisages a reimbursement from the city to businesses when they improve on their façades. It could be anything from painting and signage to canvas awnings. The city can give out a maximum of $5,000 to each project.

"The intent was to help business owners or property owners make new additions or replacements that would add to the visual appeal of the downtown. The hope was that through this matching grant program, an additional incentive would be given to get this type of tenant improvement done sooner than later," said Danielle Surdin, the city's economic development coordinator.

She said that the city hoped to instill a sense of excitement among business owners. "All infrastructure needs continuous maintenance. However, during tough times, these maintenance issues can be placed on a lower priority," said Surdin.

The city has earmarked $50,000 for the program. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until July 1, 2005.

"Every little step helps. This is a step in the right direction," said Karen Grellas, proprietor of Viaggios. She said that she would use the funds to have the restaurant awning sewn and do some grouting work in the front. Some landscaping work has also been planned.

Surdin said that improvements like this would benefit both businesses and residents and add to the quality of life in the city.
