Six-foot-2, 245 pounds ... 6-foot-3, 320 pounds ... 6-foot-2, 280 pounds ... 6-foot, 260 pounds—those are the sizes of the four returning senior offensive linemen for the Westmont Warriors this fall.
But aside from their big, experienced returning linemen, the Warriors also have a number of returning running backs and a defensive lineman. Put it all together, and Westmont could definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this year.
Tyler Porras (6-foot-2, 245), Kyle Portus (6-foot-3, 320), Ramsey Habib (6-foot, 260) and Charles Tinsley (6-foot-2, 280) will make up the majority of the offensive line for the Warriors. Among them, Porras stands out as a returning all-leaguer last season, but together they will be a powerful wall for any defense to break.
Of course, these "warriors" won't just be protecting the ball, they will be fighting for it—each one doubles as a defensive lineman. With these four giants going both ways, offensive and defensive linemen for opposing teams will have their work cut out for them.
With a line that averages 275 and well over 6-feet tall in most positions, it will make the job of the running back a little easier.
Daniel Weller (5-foot-9, 170) will be one of the three returning running backs for the Warriors. Weller is no stranger to the game, having been honored as second team all-leaguer his sophomore year and then first team all-leaguer his junior year on the squad. We can expect big things this season from Weller.
Joining Weller in running the football will be two returning juniors.
Stefan Fowler (5-foot-5, 160) will actually rotate his position. When he isn't running the ball he will be running after it as a wide receiver or defensive back.
Chantz Staden (5-foot-10, 170) will be yet another returning running back for the Warriors, but like Fowler will not always remain in that position. Staden was on the all-league honorable mention list last year and will be working as a cornerback and a wide receiver as well as running the ball this season.
Senior Dean Hicks (5-foot-9, 165) will also be returning for the Warriors. Hicks will be fighting in the trenches as a defensive lineman and doing his best to keep the pigskin from moving at all.
Along with the returning varsity players, Westmont also has a number of upcoming junior varsity players that are very promising.
Junior Will Evans (6-foot-3, 235) will join the giant o-line this season in protecting the football. Evans will also be a part of the defensive line this season where he can hunt what he protects.
Jeff Andrews (5-foot-10, 250) is another promising lineman who has come up from the junior varsity. This junior will join his fellow o-line members in going both ways when needed. With six players that can share duty on o and d lines, the Warriors will be able to stay rested and keep up their attacks.
P.J. Howard (6-foot-2, 170) will be a large edition to the defensive line. As a junior playing his first season on varsity, Howard is expected to make a difference as an enforcer on the defense.
Ben Prevadell (5-foot-11, 205), Roger Mai (5-foot-9, 180) and Arthur Esterkin (6-foot, 210) will step up as junior linebackers. The three together will be working on keeping anything and everything out of the middle of the field for the Warriors.
Junior Kelly Peterson (5-foot-5, 150) will spend the majority of his time batting down passes as a cornerback, but when he isn't knocking them down, he will be catching them as a wide receiver.
Kevin Pham (5-foot-10, 160) will be stepping up as the head of the offense this year. Pham will be a young quarterback for the Warriors, but is able and willing to step up to the task.
Juniors aren't the only new faces to the varsity this season. Senior Connor Quinn (6-foot-2, 170) transferred in from Mitty and will be running down the ball as a defensive back and a wide receiver.
"Though we have limited varsity experience, these young men are very competitive," said head coach Tony Santos.
With the junior varsity team coming off of a 9-1 season, this year should be very interesting for the Warriors.
Westmont will open the season on the road against Fremont of Oakland on Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m.
