Big Bad Voodoo Daddy brings big-band style to the Winery
By Jennifer McBride
Residents shouldn't be surprised if they see people walking around town dressed up in 1940s-era clothing this Friday. Since it's a little early for Halloween, most likely they are on their way to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the world-renowned swing band whose fans are known for occasionally dressing to match the band's typical concert attire of 1940s suits and fedoras.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy lead singer Scotty Morris is happy with the way the band's career has been going.

"I like this stage in our career," says Morris. He says it is not so much about the glitz and glamour anymore, but just working hard, every day. The band is currently promoting its brand new live CD and DVD, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live, which was released on Aug. 3 and features live versions of songs off its last three albums. Morris says it was recorded at the band's 10-year anniversary show at the Ventura Theater in Southern California. This is the first time the band has ever released live material. Morris says fans have been asking for it for quite some time, and the band was happy to finally give it to them.

Another plus for the band recently was when its song "Mr. Pinstripe Suit" was used by U.S. Olympic gymnast Carly Patterson as the music for her backflipping routine in Athens—the routine that ended up winning her the gold medal. Amazingly, it was a surprise to everyone in the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy camp.

"We had no idea—actually, we were watching it on TV as it happened," says Morris. "It was very exciting for us; we were very honored."

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is known for being one of the hardest-working bands in the biz—in 10 years of touring, the band has played approximately 1,400 concerts, more than 150 of which have been this year alone. Its current tour began in June of this year.

"We've been going out pretty much every day since then," says Morris. "I've only had a couple of days off to be at home. We pretty much stop in to wash our clothes and then head out again." Morris says the band is looking forward to its upcoming local show at the Mountain Winery on Sept. 10.
