Glenn D. Duggins

Glenn David Duggins died on Sept. 2. He was 82.

Duggins was born on Sept. 29, 1921, in Seattle, Wash. He was at the University of Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor and, as a member of the ROTC program, was immediately inducted into the Royal Hawaiian Guard, serving as the governor's personal bodyguard at the Iolani Palace.

Duggins was eventually sworn into the U.S. Army. By 1943 he was serving in the military police, and he attended officers training school. During duty, he was at Normandy and served in the European theater.

After his service he returned to Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington and married May Backlund in 1949. They had two sons, David and Michael. During the Korean War, he was called back into service from 1950 to 1953. He then worked for Owens Corning in Seattle and was transferred to Santa Clara in 1961. He eventually opened his own business, Central California Insulation, where he worked until he retired and sold the business to his son David in 1980.

Duggins was preceded in death by his son Michael. He is survived by his wife, May Duggins of Saratoga; his son David Duggins and his wife, Kirsten, of Los Gatos; his grandchildren, Tori Duggins of San Jose and Erika Duggins of Manhattan Beach; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, June and Arnie Holden of Seattle.

Beatrice G. Swanson

Beatrice Grace Swanson died on Sept. 3 in Los Gatos.

She was born in San Francisco in 1920. She was married to Ray J. Swanson in 1942, and they were married until his death in March of 2003. Swanson was a school secretary with the Saratoga Union School District for 18 years until her retirement in 1987. She then volunteered for 10 years at the Community Hospital in Los Gatos.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirlee McKibbin of Sacramento, Sandra Haynes of Hayward and Sue Fox of Los Gatos; her son, Richard Swanson, and his wife, Robyn, of Antioch; her grandchildren, Stephen Fox, Kelly McKibbin, Scott Haynes, Nathan Fox, Sam McKibbin, Carrie Haynes and Amy Swanson; and her great-grandchildren, Tashia, Taylor, Christopher, Jordon and Joseph.

Graveside services were held on Sept. 9 at Madronia Cemetary in Saratoga, followed by a reception at The Plumed Horse Restaurant in downtown Saratoga. Donations can be made in her name to a cancer charity of choice. Arrangements were handled by the Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills in Los Gatos.
