Brandon Kinsting has a great many choices. With a stable of talented running backs behind him, the Saratoga quarterback can give the ball away or run it himself.
But go to the air? With Peter Rutti, Phil Spencer, Tyler Williams and Kinsting himself all capable of breaking one any time they touch the football, the Falcons don't throw much.
And they didn't throw much when they played host to Milpitas last Friday afternoon on the Saratoga turf—they threw just enough.
Kinsting completed just two passes—one an 86-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Alex Lagemann, and the other a 50-yarder to tight end Ryan Hall to set up another score.
The two passes were enough to lead the Falcons to an impressive 14-2 win over Milpitas, improving Saratoga's record to 1-1 to in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 3-2 overall.
"This was a great win for us," said Saratoga coach Kurt Heinrich. "I was really pleased with our defense."
The Saratoga defense blanked the Milpitas offense. And if not for a first-quarter safety, the Falcons would have had the shutout against the Trojans.
"The defense did a fantastic job," added Heinrich. "[Coach Kevin Tanner] got the defense ready to play and they executed the game plan."
"In fact, I'm proud of all of our coaches," added Heinrich.
The offense did its job with a touchdown in the first quarter and another in the second.
Kinsting tossed the 86-yard TD pass to Lagemann in the first quarter, and his 50-yard toss to Hall set up a 16-yard touchdown run by Spencer. David Orasin kicked the extra points after each score.
Heinrich praised the work of receivers coach Ray Burney for "getting Alex ready to play." Lagemann ran a slant, and hit a seam after making the catch to go all the way for the first touchdown.
"Brandon did a nice job of reading the defense on the play," said Heinrich of his senior quarterback.
The Falcons led 14-2 at intermission, and the defense went to work in the second to preserve the win.
"It was a field position game in the second half," added the coach. "And then the defense had two huge stops on the goalline."
The Falcons had their backs to the end zone, but stopped the Trojans to take over on downs. Saratoga fumbled the ball back to Milpitas, but once more the defense stood firm deep in its own territory.
"It was awesome," said Heinrich.
Kyle Stouffers intercepted a couple of passes to lead the Saratoga defense and the coach also singled out Hall, Adam Sato, Brent Walter, Mark Denari, Greg Mow, T.J. Florence and Danny Wallace for outstanding defensive efforts.
The coach was pleased with the running of Spencer, Williams and Rutti and he praised the work of Danny Kowitz, Sato, Scott Francis, Augie Lagemann and Chris Chavez across the offensive front.
Saratoga will try to make it two straight in league play, but that will be no easy task for the Falcons. Saratoga will visit Los Gatos on Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m., to face the Wildcats in what figures to be a key De Anza Division match-up.
"It's going to be, I think, a pretty good ballgame," said Los Gatos coach Butch Cattolico. "They kind of dominated Milpitas. It was the first time I've seen a Saratoga-Milpitas game where there was very little doubt that the better athletes were on the Saratoga side."
"Their line was aggressive and got off the ball," said Cattolico of Saratoga. "They were much more physical than the Milpitas kids. They made yards when they needed to and their defense shut down Milpitas."
The Cats take a 1-0 league record and 4-1 season mark into the game.
"You know what you're going to get," said Heinrich of the Wildcats. "They've got a lot of talent over there."
"This is going to be a dogfight on Friday night," said Cattolico.
