Panthers suffer toss loss to Wildcats
By Dick Sparrer
Jason Potmesil knew heading into the season who the top three field hockey teams would be in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League—Los Gatos, Saratoga and his own Prospect Panthers.

"We look to finish in the top three and we're hoping for a league championship and a run at the Central Coast Section title," said Potmesil in mid September. "We feel we have the talent and the players to do it."

Well, those title hopes were dealt a severe blow last week when the Panthers dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Los Gatos. The win helped propel the Wildcats to 4-1-1 in league play and the Panthers slipped to 2-4 in the division and to 6-4 for the year.

The clubs battled through a scoreless first half. Prospect scored a couple of goals in the second half but gave up three to drop the league decision.

Sophomore Paige Madsen knocked in a goal off an assist from Lizzie Innes, and Linney Warren scored off an Innes assist later in the game. But it wasn't enough for the Panthers.

Seniors Innes, Warren and Casie Reiss are top returners for the Panthers this fall. Both Innes and Reiss are returning all-leaguers, and Innes was the team's Most Valuable Player a year ago.

Madsen tops a talented cast of newcomers that also includes juniors Susie Leckie, Caroline Ogawa and Ola Szczepaniak and sophomores Rachel Kullick and Teresa Kullick.

Potmesil enters his fourth season as the Prospect head coach and, following the loss to Gatos, he boasts a career coaching record of 39-21-8.

The Panthers, who were to visit Leigh on Tuesday, will host Lynbrook on Oct. 14, 3 p.m. The Vikings are 0-5-1 and still looking for their first league win.

Saratoga pulled out a key win over Los Gatos to improve to 3-1 in league play. The clubs battled to a scoreless tie through regulation, but senior Kellie York knocked home a goal in sudden death overtime to give the Falcons a thrilling 1-0 win.

York scored the game-winner off assists from seniors Gwen Belomy and Suzanne Lessack.

The Falcons entered play this week with two games. Saratoga was to visit perennial powerhouse St. Francis on Tuesday and will host Mitty on Oct. 14, 3 p.m.

In Santa Teresa Division play last week, Westmont battled Los Altos to a 1-1 tie in overtime. The Warriors are now 3-2-2 in the division and 3-5-3 for the year.

Sophomore Courtney Schembri knocked in a second-half goal off an assist from senior Lisa Parola, but the Eagles tied it with a goal before the end of regulation. After a scoreless sudden death overtime, the clubs settled for a 1-1 tie.
