Westmont locked in a tie for first in girls volleyball
By Dick Sparrer
It took them four games against Independence to do it, but the Westmont girls volleyball team swept a pair of matches last week to improve their record to 7-1 in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Warriors, 17-11 overall this season, opened the week by making short work of Mt. Pleasant, winning in three games 25-16, 26-24, 25-13. Junior outside hitter Ashley Britton nailed eight kills to lead Westmont to the win.

Two days later, the Warriors outlasted the 76ers 25-15, 25-9, 22-25, 25-15. Senior middle blocker Katrina Parik had big night for Westmont, hammering home 17 kills to lead the Warriors to the four-game win.

Westmont went into the week in a three-way tie for the division lead with Branham and Leigh, all three squads at 5-1, with Leland just a match back at 4-2. Branham and Leigh both defeated the Chargers to knock them out of the race, and the Bruins beat Piedmont Hills and the Longhorns topped Santa Teresa in their other matches.

So now it's Westmont, Branham and Leigh sharing first place with matching 7-1 marks heading into another big week. Westmont was to host Branham on Oct. 19 and will visit Leland on Oct. 21, 6 p.m. The Chargers may be out of hunt for the division championship, but they remain a team not to be taken lightly.

It was a tough week for the Prospect girls in the BVAL's Santa Teresa Division. The Panthers lost 25-23, 25-11, 25-23 to Andrew Hill, despite getting eight kills from sophomore middle blocker Lizzie Miller, and they fell 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 to Willow Glen.

The two losses dropped Prospect to 1-6 in league play and 1-9 for the year.

Innes scores

Lizzie Innes did something last week that no other Prospect player could do in five periods of field hockey action—score a goal.

Innes knocked in a first-half goal against Lynbrook on Thursday to help the Panthers pull out a tight 1-0 win over the Vikings on the Prospect field.

The senior, a comeback all-leaguer for the Panthers, knocked in the goal in an otherwise scoreless week for Prospect. The Panthers had battled Leigh to a 0-0 overtime tie to the open the week.

Prospect is now 3-4-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL and 7-4-1 for the year.

In other action in the division, Saratoga split a couple of decisions, blanking St. Francis 2-0 before losing 2-1 to Mitty.

Junior Alex Block knocked in a couple of second-half goals off assists from Caroline Charles and Gwen Bellomy to break a scoreless tie and life the Falcons to the 2-0 win over the Lancers.

Two days later, Kellie York scored in the second, but the Falcons lost 2-1 to Mitty. The clubs played to scoreless first half, but Mitty topped Saratoga 2-1 in the second to clinch the win.

Mitty improved to 6-1-1 in the division and to 9-1-1 overall with the win. Saratoga is now 5-3 in the division.

The Falcons face a key match-up this week. They were to open the week at Prospect on Tuesday, and then they host Los Gatos on Oct. 21, 3:15 p.m. The Wildcats are 4-2-1 in league play.

In Santa Teresa Division competition last week, Lisa Parola and Jennifer Scott each had a goal and an assist to lift Westmont to a 2-1 overtime win over Cupertino.

Parola, a junior and a returning all-leaguer, scored a first-half goal off an assist by Scott, but the Pioneers tied it with a goal in the second half to force the overtime. Scott, a sophomore, ended things in sudden death when she scored off a Parola assist to give Westmont the victory.

Westmont is now 4-2-2 in the Santa Teresa Division and 4-5-3 for the year.

Wacker, Palm win

Westmont and Prospect may not have done much as teams in league cross country competition last week, but Jessica Wacker and Becky Palm certainly did fine.

Westmont's Wacker won the Santa Teresa Division race in 19:36 at Montgomery Hill Park, and Prospect's Palm took the West Valley Division run in 19:49.

Michael Pickens of Westmont finished fifth in the boys varsity race, covering the Montgomery Hill course in 17:00.
