By LISA TOTH

With results still being finalized for Santa Clara County's Nov. 2 general election, education-related unofficial results were reported by the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters on Nov. 3.

In West Valley-Mission Community College District's Area 2, which includes Santa Clara and portions of San Jose, 112,273 people voted, with 46,782 or 41.7 percent of those votes going to Christopher Stampolis, a planning commissioner for the city of Santa Clara, and 43,824 (39 percent) going to incumbent Robert Owens. Ronald Stasiak, a financial adviser, was defeated, earning only 21,461 (19.1 percent) of the votes.

Within the community college district's Area 3, which includes Campbell and West San Jose, 109,495 citizens voted, with 40,479 votes (37 percent) being cast for incumbent Chris Constantin and 37,184 votes (34 percent) going to incumbent Joy Atkins. Incumbent Frank Jewett was defeated, obtaining only 31,573 votes (28.8 percent).

The community college district's Measure H bond also passed with 53,483 votes (60 percent) of the 89,764 total votes. The bond will provide funds for repairs and renovations at both West Valley and Mission schools. The funding will help to upgrade facilities, renovate science and computer labs, replace roofs and upgrade technology. Improvements to energy, plumbing, heating and ventilation are also planned.

In the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, past co-President of the Saratoga High School PTSA Rosemary Rossi and incumbent Dr. Lorrie Wernick won the tight race. There were only two seats available, with five candidates competing. Out of 21,503 people who voted, 5,146 of those votes (24 percent) went to Rossi and 5,023 votes (23 percent) went to Wernick. The defeated candidates included Steven Kahl with 4,453 votes (21 percent), Michele van Zuiden with 3,998 votes (19 percent) and Carol Barmeier with 2,870 votes (13 percent).

In the Los Gatos Union School District, Chris Miller, a credentialed teacher, and Karen Sanders Noe, who works in marketing and business administration, were elected to office. Of the 12,769 votes, Miller earned 4,717 votes (37 percent), while Sanders Noe took 4,271 votes (34 percent). Incumbent Alex Granas was defeated, with only 3,767 votes (30 percent).

Saratoga Union School District's race was also tough, with incumbent and board President Cindy Ruby taking the most of the 7,427 total votes. Ruby earned 2,506 votes (34 percent), while Shinku Sharma won 1,895 votes (26 percent). Kenneth Schulz and incumbent John Waite were defeated. Schulz gained only 1,547 votes (21 percent), while Waite had 1,469 votes (20 percent).

Kao, Waltonsmith win; Measure V fails

By KAUSTUV BASU

Unofficial results from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters show that the two seats for the Saratoga City Council have gone to Aileen Kao, former Saratoga Union School District board member, and Mayor Ann Waltonsmith, who was an incumbent.

Kao received 4,577 votes, which is 35.8 percent of the total votes, and Waltonsmith was reelected with 4,141 votes (32.4 percent). Andrew Barnes finished third with 4,049 votes (31.8 percent).

Measure V, the utility tax measure, failed with 6,787 Saratoga residents saying no to the measure (81 percent), while 1,615 voters said yes (19 percent).

Measure U, the advisory to Measure V, passed with 4,316 votes in favor (55 percent) and 3,544 opposed (45 percent). But with the failure of Measure V, the advisory measure holds no meaning.
