San Jose Stealth defenseman Jim Moss visited Foothill Elementary School in Saratoga on Oct. 20 as part of a Red Ribbon Day assembly.
During his inspirational speech, Moss advocated healthy lifestyles and encouraged students to stay away from drugs and cigarettes. He also spoke about what it takes to be a professional athlete and how to live a healthy life. According to parents, Moss appeared to energize the students and connect with them during his speech.
Red Ribbon Week took place this year from Oct. 23 to 31. It began as a national movement in the mid-1980s to keep children off drugs. While the event is typically celebrated the last full week of October and encompasses two weekends, the dates can change from year to year. Different schools chose to observe the event on different days or weeks throughout the month of October.
Gene's Fine Foods of Saratoga donated red apples and grapes that were handed out for a healthy lunchtime snack, while Safeway donated helium-filled red balloons to provide decorations. Prizes were distributed to Foothill students in grades K5 for the best anti-drug and "stay healthy" posters, poems and essays, which were part of Red Ribbon Day contests. The winners also received prizes autographed by beach volleyball Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh of Saratoga, as well as Jamba Juice gift certificates.
