Falcons sting Hornets, advance in playoffs
By Kevin Sparrer
What happens when two titans clash? Complete and total mayhem. But the Falcons of West Valley Pop Warner were on the winning end after a chaotic day of junior midget division football when they defeated the Novato Jr. Hornets 22-6.

The Falcons were the champions in the Peninsula Division, while Novato came out on top of the Redwood Empire Division, putting these two teams in direct competition for a shot at the national championship.

The Falcons were able to rack up 264 yards of total offense on 64 plays, only seven of which were passes.

Kyle Miller completed 4 of 7 passes for 38 yards and one touchdown, and also ran the ball 14 times for 69 yards.

Will Sparks carried the ball 26 times for 129 yards, which was the majority of the Falcon offense on the evening. Sparks also ran for two touchdowns for the Falcons. Josh Ajlouni added 26 rushing on seven carries for West Valley.

The reason Sparks, Miller and Ajlouni were able to run and move the ball like they did was due to the extreme success of the offensive line. Jake Boettcher, Sukhrai Sohol, Dan Ajlouni, Michael Combs, John Batinich, Tommy Silvas, Ricky Ramirez, Alex Asturias and Craig Zeiter made up the O-line.

The Falcons defense also stepped it up a notch for the tough game, allowing only 71 yards overall, with just 22 on the ground. Joey Vizzusi and Batinich both recovered fumbles for West Valley.

Aside from one slip-up on a kickoff return, the Falcon defense was so strong that the Hornets from Novato were unable to penetrate deeper than the Falcon 30-yard line.

"This was one of the most complete games our kids have turned in all season," said Falcon head coach Pat McGrady.

West Valley was to face the Douglas Tigers in Reno with the winner advancing to Orlando with a chance to win the national junior midget division title.
