The Armijo basketball team just might wear out its welcome in Los Gatos if the Indians continue to treat their hosts the way they did last Saturday night in the championship game of the Los Gatos Lions Club Wildcat Shootout basketball tournament.
Armijo and Los Gatos met for the championship this year and the Indians pounded out a decisive 65-45 win.
Armijo's Derek Simmons played well enough to win the tournament's Most Valuable Player award, and teammate Leroy Moore was named to the all-tournament team. Rounding out the all-tourney list were Ted Hull and Jordan Vandenberg from Los Gatos, Mike Kaufmann from Pioneer, Danny Wallace from Saratoga and Matt Van Keulen from Live Oak.
Los Gatos made it to the championship game by virtue of a 51-40 win over Willow Glen in round one followed by a hard fought 82-76 overtime victory against Saratoga in the semi-finals.
The Wildcats almost got denied a trip to the championship game by a tenacious Saratoga team. The Falcons run a tough full court press and a swarming defense that wreaks havoc on opponent's offense and it caused Los Gatos to make numerous mistakes and give the Falcons a 14-13 edge after a quarter of play.
However, Hull was red hot, knocking down 21 of his game high 35 points before halftime to put Los Gatos up 35-27 at the intermission.
The one-two outside-inside punch of the Falcons' Chris Etterman and Wallace proved almost too much to handle. Etterman netted 22 points, including four from beyond the three-point circle, while Wallace did his damage inside the paint, banging in 18 points. The biggest two came when he grabbed a rebound with time running out and put it back up and in at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Nima Rad aided the outside attack firing in three long range jumpers for nine points on the night while Ben Coggins dumped in eight points from down low.
The Falcons' loss put them in the third place final against Pioneer.
Saratoga and Pioneer fought their way in a give and take battle from the opening tip off with Saratoga eventually prevailing in a 73-66 overtime win to claim third place in the tourney. Tenacious defense by both squads caused sloppy play and poor shooting on both ends of the court with Saratoga able to scratch out a 34-31 halftime lead on the shooting of Rad, Ryan Matsura and Etterman from outside.
Pioneer edged its way to within two points at 62-60 with 13 seconds left in regulation. The Mustangs came out of a timeout and used Mark Bundlie as a decoy to get Kaufmann open down low and he banked in a shot with three seconds left to tie it up and send it into overtime.
Pioneer drew first blood in the overtime on a rebound and put back by Bundlie and then Rad answered with a three-ball. The Mustangs did not score again until only 20 seconds were left in the game while Saratoga converted six of 13 free throws to grab the win.
Long-range bombs were plentiful by both teams. The Falcons racked up seven three-pointers by the trio of Rad (three), Etterman (two) and Matsura (two).
Rad led the Falcons with 18 points while Wallace dropped in 16 and Matsura netted 15. Etterman added 10.
