Falcons fall in Pop Warner finals, but it was quite a run
By Kevin Sparrer
The Falcons' wings have been clipped, but only after a long flight that covered a nation and lasted an entire season.

The incredible run has ended for the Falcons in the West Valley Pop Warner junior midget division.

It started with a Peninsula Division championship, then a 22-6 win over the Novato Jr. Hornets earned the squad a trip to Reno, Nev., to play for the Pacific Northwest Division 2 crown. A 20-8 victory over the Douglas Tigers in the Nevada snow qualified the Falcons for a trip to the Pop Warner Super Bowl--3,000 miles away in Florida.

The Falcons, the first Pop Warner team from Los Gatos or Saratoga to make the trip east for the finals, opened with a 16-0 win over the Detroit Hurricanes. Then they were going after the national championship, and only the Knights of Newington, Conn., stood in their way.

Both the Falcons (12-0-1) and the Knights entered the Pop Warner Super Bowl undefeated and neither was likely to give up that record easily.

The Falcons put a scare into the Knights with an 8-6 lead at the half on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Miller to Craig Zeider. Then came the best defense the Knights had--rain.

With the addition of 30 mile an hour winds and a downpour of rain, the Falcons were grounded.

The Knights, however, took advantage of the rain and pushed their running game into gear. Two 70-yard touchdown runs gave the Knights a 20-8 lead entering the final minute of the game, then they put the game away with a last minute touchdown to finish the scoring and the game 28-8.

Miller connected with his receivers 7 of 18 times for 96 yards and one touchdown. Geo Shannon, Tommy Silvas and Zeider each had catches.

Shannon had two catches for 53 yards, Silvas had two for 25 and Zeider had three for 18 yards with the only touchdown of the day for the Falcons.

The Falcons were only able to gain 121 yards of total offense in the game while the Knights came away with more than 300.

Earlier in the week things went better for the Falcons in their 16-0 victory over the Detroit Hurricanes.

Miller ran for one touchdown and hit Zeider with a 4-yard touchdown pass for the only two scores of the game.

Miller scrambled for 44 yards and threw for 74 more to help the offense, but that wasn't it. Miller also picked off two passes on the defensive side of the ball.

Josh Ajlouni ran for 68 yards, while Silvas, Shannon and Zeider all had catches in the win.

The Hurricanes had scored 194 points during their season and only allowed six, but a combined effort of Sukhrai Sohol, Joey Vizzusi, Ross Kundtz, John Batinich, Myles Johansen, Craig Arelia, Will Sparks, Silvas and Miller kept the Detroit offense out of the end zone completely.
