Redwood impressive at league mat finals
By Kevin Sparrer
The Redwood Middle School varsity wrestling squad had the members of the audience pinned to their seats and the competition pinned to the mat at the West Valley League championships.

The Griffins gave their best performance in a decade with a third-place finish and also sent 10 wrestlers to the sectional tournament, when normally no more than three Redwood wrestlers attend the prestigious tourney.

Three Griffins left the league finals with championships in their weight classes, with six more taking home second place awards.

Nathan Nguyen took the 70-pound class by storm, pinning an opponent in 32 seconds and winning 15-4 in his championship match for a first-place finish.

Richard Macklin joined his teammate in the winner's circle after totally dominating the 80-pound class, never once being threatened in any of his matches.

Allen Yen, who wasn't even seeded, shocked the tournament field with a 4-2 overtime victory in the 175-pound weight class.

The six second-place finishers included Matt Marshall at 110 pounds, Justin El Diway at 115, Jens Karrens at 150, Jasper Loren at 135, Max Venuti at 165 and Scott Thoren at heavyweight.

Stephen Alleshouse finished third at 125 pounds.

The Redwood junior varsity squad followed along with varsity, with Kevin Smith winning the championship in the 90-pound weight class. Kyle Karrens (70) and Stephan Leslie (135) both finished in second place. Danny Baldwin (115) and Trevor Teerlink (100) added to the long list of placers with fourth-place finishes.

The Griffins program has significantly grown this year, beginning with only 15 wrestlers and then increasing to 30 by the end of the season. Midseason meant a new mat for the Griffins, which helped expand practice space. Next year Redwood hopes for 50 wrestlers and a finish of first or second in league.
