Flowers back in Heritage Orchard, and so is the annual Mustard Walk
By Kaustuv Basu
The yellow mustard flowers are in full bloom in the Heritage Orchard. It is a sign that Saratoga's annual Mustard Walk is around the corner.

The walk, on Feb. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., celebrates the city's heritage and history. The Saratoga Historical Foundation will present a slideshow at the Warner Hutton House and, as in previous years, one of the main attractions will be the donkey cart rides for children.

"Rick and Ann Waltonsmith will be bringing their donkeys Ike and Betsy to pull the cart," said Patricia Bailey, the chairwoman of the city's heritage preservation committee. "We're hoping that families will come to the walk before settling down for Super Bowl Sunday."

Bailey said she had looked at the long-term weather forecasts and Feb. 6 seemed to be the best option. "A lot of Saratoga schools have winter breaks around that time. We're suggesting that they come here to watch the sunshine and the mustard and then go back home to enjoy the game," she said.

Other attractions at the walk include free wine tasting at the Warner Hutton House and face painting and coloring books for kids. Twelve local artists will display their work during the event and antique cars will be on display in the parking lot outside the Warner Hutton House. Inside, staff from the Butter Paddle will prepare some mustard-related dishes.

"We will have Boy Scouts selling popcorn to aid tsunami victims in Asia," Bailey said.

Musical groups and folk dancers will also perform at the event. Docents will give interested visitors tours of the orchard.

Bailey said parking would be available at city hall and the library. "If there is a traffic overflow, people could park at Redwood Middle School," she said.
