It wasn't much of a match when the Saratoga wrestling team traveled to Harker School last week—but it was through no fault of the Falcons.
There were only six bouts contested in the match, and Saratoga won just three of them. But the Falcons posted a half dozen other victories as Harker forfeited in six of the 14 weight classes in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division match.
Tim Usher won 4-0 at 130 pounds, Scott Surrette won 11-1 at 140 and Michael Block won 4-2 in overtime at 160 to spark Saratoga to a lopsided 46-21 win over the Eagles.
Derek Macklin lost a tough 5-3 decision at 145 pounds and Danny Gold at 135 and Kyle Patzman at 189 were each pinned in the only other matches contested.
Saratoga forfeited in one division and there were no heavyweights.
The Falcons are now 5-0 in the El Camino Division and will host Lynbrook on Feb. 3, 5:30 p.m., in league action. A week later, Saratoga will visit Gunn in Palo Alto on Feb. 10, 5:30 p.m., in the match that will determine the division dual match championship. The Falcons will then advance to the SCVAL finals on Feb. 11 and 12 at Lynbrook.
Saratoga standout Brent Walter competed in the 25th annual Mid-Cal Classic tournament in Gilroy last weekend and placed fourth at 191 pounds. The rugged tourney is considered to be one of the toughest two-day affairs in Northern California.

The Falcons ran their record to 7-0 in the division and to 19-3 for the year with wins over Santa Clara, Wilcox and Cupertino. The Pioneers slipped to 6-2 in league play after the loss and hold second place.
Saratoga will try to stay on top of the pack this week, facing just one game. The Falcons were to host Monta Vista (3-3) on Feb. 1 and won't be back on the floor on Feb. 9 when they visit Los Altos (2-5).
Senior center Danny Wallace and junior Ryan Matsuura pumped in 15 points apiece to lead the Falcons to the win over the Pioneers. Wallace tossed in five buckets from the floor and added five points at the free-throw line. Matsuura had two field goals and pitched in 11 points from the line.
The clubs were locked in a 49-49 tie at the end of regulation, then matched seven points in the first overtime. That's when the Falcons took over, outscoring 'Tino 19-11 in the second extra period.
Justin Kemp supported with 14 points and Nima Rad added 10 points to finish in double digits. He popped a three-pointer in the win. Chris Etterman had a three among his nine points and Bo Nielson had five, including a three. Ken Baba had three points and David Orasin and Kia Agahdel had two apiece.

Nielson and Agahdel popped seven points apiece, Barry Ju had five, Etterman and Ben Coggins hit four each and Orasin and Peter Sclavos both had two.
Saratoga opened the week with a 65-52 win over Santa Clara. Wallace had the hot hand with 17 points and Etterman had 10, including a couple of threes. Rad had two threes among his nine points. Coggins and Kemp hit six points apiece, Nielson had five and Matsuura, Orasin and Agahdel added four each.
Girls basketball
The Saratoga girls, meanwhile, dropped a pair of games last week, falling 62-47 to Homestead and 36-25 to Gunn to slip to 1-7 in the De Anza Division.
