Matthew E. Bergstedt
Matthew Einar Bergstedt, 32, formerly of Saratoga, died Jan. 20 at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. after a three-year struggle with malignant melanoma.
Bergstedt was born in Mountain View and grew up in Sunnyvale and Saratoga. He was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Saratoga High School in 1990. He earned a two-year degree from Utah Valley Community College and a bachelor's degree in family and consumer studies from the University of Utah. He went on to earn his master's degree in marriage and family therapy at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a mission in Norway.
Bergstedt was married to Ingjerd Merete Johansen on July 5, 1997. At the time of his death, the couple had a 4-year old son, Jakob, and their second son is expected to be born in May. They have lived the last three years in Louisville, Ky., where Ingjerd is attending dental school and he was practicing as a family counselor. He served in the High Priest group in his ward. He enjoyed snowboarding, rock climbing and creating pottery.
He is survived by his wife Ingjerd Bergstedt and his son Jakob Waldemar Bergstedt; his parents Einar W. and Connie Acord Bergstedt; his sister Lisa Ortega; his sister Stacy Wright and her husband Roland; his parents-in-law Egil and Gunvor Johansen of Norway; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Faun Acord and Waldemar and Ruth Bergstedt.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 26 in Salt Lake City.
