Sheriff's captain gives report on sex offenders to the council
By Kaustuv Basu
A search on the Megan's Law website shows 11 registered sex offenders in Saratoga.

But Capt. John Hirokawa of the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department says there are only six. "Three of them are in state prison," Hirokawa said. "One is deceased." The rest have been in violation since the 1960s and '70s and do not currently live in Saratoga, according to Hirokawa. "The website does not have current information."

Hirokawa presented this information at a Saratoga City Council meeting on Feb. 16. He had been called on to speak at the meeting because neighbors in the Kevin Moran Park area had raised some questions about sex offenders in Saratoga at a previous city council meeting.

Hirokawa said that his department made periodic checks on the sex offenders who currently live in the city.

He said that the intent of the Megan's Law website was to inform neighbors.

The West Valley Sheriff's Substation received numerous phone calls from citizens after the list of sex offenders went online.

Hirokawa said that concerned parents often ask for more information about a particular victim.

"But the information we have is confidential. These people also have rights. The majority are not on probation or parole," Hirokawa said.

He said that sex offenders could also travel from one place to another, citing the example of a sex offender who was recently arrested in Sunnyvale.

In January, school officials in Cupertino and Saratoga reported sighting an adult female, wearing red shorts and a white sports bra, lurking around their campuses and standing next to students. The person was actually a male adult who often exposed himself to students.

On Feb. 3, witnesses at the Kennedy Middle School saw the person again. The witnesses chased the adult and managed to get the license plate number of his car.

The next day, the sheriff's department arrested Jeffrey Stuart Poe in Sunnyvale for indecent exposure. He was a prior sex offender who had failed to register.
