Russian chorus performs as part of local concert series
By Jennifer McBride
For the next installment in the Los Gatos Community Concert Association's 200405 season, the organization is continuing its tradition of providing an engaging variety of world music for its audiences.

The association will welcome the Slavyanka Male Russian Chorus to town for a performance at the Los Gatos United Methodist Church on March 6.

According to the choral group's website, "Slavyanka" was the name early Russian settlers in California gave to what is now known as the Russian River. The group was formed in 1979 by several former members of the Yale Russian Chorus, and today membership varies from 20 to 30 men. The group toured the former Soviet Union in 1986, 1989 and 1999 and regularly visits the Bay Area, where they say they typically perform for large, appreciative audiences.

The Slavyanka Male Russian Chorus performs "a capella," or without musical accompaniment. Members of the Los Gatos Community Concert Association say their singing is "technically demanding, with unusual harmonies and requires a range of almost four octaves." Their repertoire draws from traditional Russian sources such as Orthodox liturgy and folk and composed music from Russian and other Slavic folk. It includes compositions by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and a host of other lesser-known composers of Slavic music.

The Slavyanka Male Russian Chorus will take the stage at the Los Gatos United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. on March 6. The doors will open at 2 p.m.

Tickets for this concert are $20 for adults and $5 for students. For more information, call Ray Strong at 408.377.1106 or Lea Frey at 408.356.5698 or visit www.lgcca.org.
