Zorio makes plans to retire as the Saratoga principal in June
By Lisa Toth
As the school year ends, Saratoga Elementary School will be losing its beloved principal, Marybarbara Zorio.

Zorio, who has worked in the school district for the last seven years, recently announced her retirement plans, effective June 30. She started her career in the Saratoga district in September 1998, moving from Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in the Cupertino Union School District where she was the principal for four years.

This June, she'll complete 37 years in education and has taught at nearly every grade level. According to the Saratoga News archives, Zorio has also served as a reading specialist and science resource teacher and has taught science at the Smithsonian Institute.

Zorio earned her bachelor's degree at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkhill, N.Y. She earned both her master's and administrative credential at Santa Clara University.

Saratoga Union School District Superintendent Lane Weiss said he plans to meet with staff, community members, parents and students to seek input on the skills, qualities and professional characteristics they desire in Zorio's replacement. According to a letter he sent to the school community Feb. 9, Weiss is hoping to have a candidate who best fits the district's needs approved by the school board in mid-May, to facilitate a smooth transition of leadership. The position has not yet been posted through the school district's human resources department.
