May enforcement campaign on seatbelt usage to begin this May
By Kaustuv Basu
Buckle up ... it's the law. And the law is going to be enforced during a campaign that will focus on seatbelt usage during a 21-day period from May 16 to June 5.

The West Valley Substation of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to be used during a campaign to increase seatbelt use.

The grant amounts to about $44,000 and will be used in Saratoga, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills. The grant was awarded so that the cities could participate in the California Seat Belt Compliance Campaign.

"This is a one-time grant," said Aaron Starr, a policy analyst at County Supervisor Liz Kniss's office. "There will be more officers on the roads during the three-week period."

Sgt. Bill Tait at the West Valley Substation said that seatbelt compliance in the state has been going down.

"I believe that campaigns like this help with compliance," he said.

A first-time seatbelt citation costs around $80.

A seatbelt enforcement campaign was conducted in Saratoga in August and September last year.

"We gave out 135 seatbelt citations during that period," Tait said. "We had 95 percent compliance in Saratoga."
