Sometimes a loss can be more inspiring than a victory, and that's just what happened for the Westmont baseball team when the Warriors squared off against Branham on March 9 and 11. After losing 14-2 on Wednesday, the Warriors came back on Friday with a renewed vigor and won the second game of the week 7-4.
It was junior designated hitter Doug Molseed who led the offense for the Warriors. Molseed went 3 for 3 with a triple that drove in two runs to spark a rally in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Matt Medeiros topped the hill for the Warriors, allowing four runs in six innings, with four strikeouts, before Jimenez took over in the top of the seventh. Jimenez threw five straight strikes for two outs on a strikeout and a ground out, then threw two more to go up 0-2 on the next hitter. He struck him out as well three pitches later on a 2-2 count.
"We played good defense," said Westmont head coach John Salberg. "That was our focus after the game on Wednesday."
The turning point of this game had to be the fourth inning. Westmont was trailing 2-1 heading into the inning but put together a group of hits to score five runs to take the lead.
Brad Davis started the rally with a line drive single to left and then advanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, D.J. Jackman rolled a single up the middle, allowing Davis to score. Jackman went to second on a balk by the Bruin pitcher and then Justin Jimenez took first base after being hit by a pitch. After the second out, Molseed stepped to the plate and hit a line shot into left that skipped past the outfielder on the short, quick grass of the Westmont field, allowing both runs to score and Molseed to reach third without a throw. Kelly Peterson then knocked in Molseed with deep ground ball to the shortstop, and Peterson beat the throw for an infield hit. Ryan Magana hit a ground ball through the right side to put two runners on base. Then Davis came up to the plate for the second time in the inning and drew a walk, but all three ended up stranded.
Dillon Tindall, Steven Brady and Jackman quelled a possible rally in the top of the fifth when one of the Bruins hit a long ball into right that got past Brady. Brady chased down the ball and threw it in to Tindall who fired a perfect relay to Jackman, beating the runner to third for the first out of the inning. Branham ended up with only two runs in the inning--not enough to catch Westmont.
The Warriors put up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Magana came to the plate with one out and the bases empty. Managa ripped a double into left before Davis drew a walk. With two outs, Jackman hit a ground ball to short that took the shortstop deep in the hole for an infield hit. With the bases loaded, Jimenez drew a walk to force Managa in for the only run of the inning.
The first run of the game for the Warriors was scored in the bottom of the third when Molseed singled and went all the way to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Peterson hit a sacrifice fly to right that was deep enough for Molseed to score.
Managa went 2 for 4 on the day with a double, and Jackman also went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Jimenez went singled, walked twice and was hit by pitch. Peterson went had a single and a sac fly to right and Davis went 2 for 2 with two walks.
"We played smart," said Salberg. "They were allowing themselves to be walked."
In their game with Branham earlier in the week, though, the Warriors lost 14-2, despite making good contact. Davis ripped a home run, and Matt Hawkins went 2 for 3 with two doubles. Molseed singled, Magana had a base hit, Peterson doubled and Tindall singled and drove in a run with a sac fly.
Westmont will visit Mt. Pleasant on March 16 and the Warriors will host the Cardinals on March 18. Both games begin at 3:30 p.m.
