Sweeping is not what you'd call a fun activity, but the Saratoga baseball team enjoyed sweeping the Lynbrook Vikings in their two-game series last week in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Falcons beat the Vikings 9-3 at Lynbrook on March 15, then took the second game 7-2 at Saratoga on Thursday in the first game ever played on the school's refurbished baseball diamond.
"This was the best game of the season for us," said Falcon head coach Jeff Walker after Thursday's win. "Multiple guys contributed to this win. The whole team stepped up with an excellent effort and we had some clutch two-out hits."
Saratoga's big inning Thursday came in the bottom of the fourth. Already leading 2-0, Augie Lagemann led off the inning with a single up the middle. Matt Wright moved Lagemann over to second with a sacrifice bunt and Scott Newberry knocked him home with a single to right. Newberry advanced to second on the throw to the plate and scored when Eric Finnegan reached on an error by the third baseman.
The Falcons also scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 7-2. Ben Coggins, pinch-hitting for Alex Herbach, led off the inning with a solid base hit into right. Finnegan dropped down a beautiful sac bunt to move Coggins to second.
Mike Sabes hammered a single up the middle that moved Coggins to third and put runners at the corners. Kyle Stoffers followed up with a ground ball to second to score Coggins. With a runner on second and one out, Peter Rutti blasted one off the wall in left center for a run-scoring triple.
Saratoga scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. Stoffers reached on an error to lead off the inning and went first to third on a single by Adam Sato. Lagemann bounced into a fielder's choice to score Stoffers. Matt Wright ripped a single to left to put two runners on, but they were both stranded.
The Falcons scored their first runs in the bottom of the second. Sato reached on an error and moved Sato to second when Wright drew a walk. Newberry got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Herbach reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Sato to score. Then Finnegan smashed a double to score Wright, but Herbach was back-doored at third to end the inning.
Though Lynbrook lost the game, the big inning came in the top of the fifth for the Vikings when they scored both of their runs to cut the Saratoga lead to 4-2. With one out, Kelly Malpas ripped a single to right that was followed by an infield single by Richard Perry. Daniel Doughty hit a ground ball to the shortstop that was booted, allowing Malpas to score. Then with Perry on third, Aaron Teagle hit a sac fly behind second base, scoring Perry. Christopher Patterson drew a walk, but Nathaniel Brady was picked off second after pinch running for Doughty.
In the first game of the week, Sato crushed three doubles and Lagemann was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored to lead Saratoga to the 9-3 victory. Wright had two hits and scored twice and Stoffers singled, stole a base and scored two runs.
For Lynbrook, Michael Thurman doubled twice, Kevin Hsu had two hits and Patterson tripled. Matt Muscolo also had a base hit for the Vikings.
Saratoga is on the road for a couple of games this week. The Falcons were to visit Fremont on March 22 and will be at Santa Clara on March 24, 3:30 p.m.
Lynbrook opens play in the Cupertino Easter Tournament this week. The Vikes were to face Gilroy on Monday and will challenge Mitty on March 23. They'll return to league play on March 29 when they host Fremont at 3:30 p.m.
