Pan paces Lynbrook, wins all-league spot
By Mike Barnhart
As a co-captain and a fourth-year varsity basketball player, Tiffany Pan expected to play a big role in Lynbrook's fortunes during her senior season. But when another co-captain--returning first-team all-leaguer Nikki Chang--suffered a knee injury early in the season, Pan stepped up big time during the Vikings' 19-11 season.

Pouring in more than 70 percent of her team-high 306 points from beyond the arc, Pan scored a league-best 75 three-point baskets. But she did much more than give opponents a long-distance runaround. Displaying a fine all-around game, the 5-foot-7 dynamo ranked second on her team in rebounds, assists and steals.

In recognition of Pan's efforts during the 200405 season, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League coaches recently honored her as the Senior of the Year in the De Anza Division.

High-scoring senior Bryte Nielson, who led Saratoga to a share of the league championship in 2004, was named Most Valuable Player after leading Los Gatos on an unbeaten run (12-0) to the league crown.

Nielson, a first-team all-De Anza selection following her sophomore and junior campaigns at Saratoga, transferred to Los Gatos last summer. After earning all-league honors last fall for her contributions to the Wildcats' league volleyball championship, the 5-foot-11 forward was the leading scorer (almost 13 points a game) and second-best rebounder for the basketbal1 squad.

Nielson was joined on the first team this year by Los Gatos teammates Madeline Rose and Julia Anderson. Rose, a co-Sophomore of the Year along with Ganeaya Rogers of Milpitas, triggered both the offense and defense from her point guard position. She led the team in assists (97) and shared a team-high in steals (70) with Anderson, another transfer from Saratoga.

Anderson, who was a second-team all-leaguer for the Falcons last season, was the rebounds leader (192) for Los Gatos this winter and ranked second to Nielson in scoring (10.6 average).

Rounding out the first team were Palo Alto's Ranecia Fields and Megan Grant and Gunn's Jill Klausner.

Seniors Vickie Chien of Lynbrook and Jordana Dreyfuss of Saratoga earned second team honors. Three local sophomores--Emily Shen of Lynbrook and Kate Mower and Cheryl Ichikawa of Homestead--also are on the eight-member second unit.

Receiving honorable mention were seniors Bailey Richardson and Alexa Anderson of Los Gatos and Melissa Manuel of Homestead and sophomore Jenna Anderson of Los Gatos.
