A 15-year-old boy driving a gold-colored Lexus led Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department deputies on a short but fast chase on March 19 before crashing his car into a tree on Saratoga Glen Drive.
Deputy Terrance Helm said that the car had reached speeds of 60 mph in a 35 mph zone on Saratoga Avenue when a deputy switched on the lights and siren in his car and started following the Lexus. But the driver sped away.
The deputy decided to follow the car but did not speed to catch up, according to Helm. "This was a residential area," he said.
The teenager, who had a 17-year-old passenger with him, then tried to make a right turn but lost control and crashed into a tree. Deputy Helm said that the driver suffered a broken shin while the passenger appeared to have a broken nose. The car was badly damaged.
"If he had stopped, he would have just gotten a ticket. But he hurt himself and his friend, wrecked a car and still got a ticket," said Helm.
The teenager was cited for reckless driving and evading an officer and was released to his parents.
