Audience will get into the act in 'Seussical' at Westmont
By Jennifer McBride
For its spring musical this year, the Westmont High School drama department really wants to get in your face.

Beginning April 1, Westmont students will honor the legacy of Dr. Seuss with their production of a new musical, Seussical. Drama teacher Jeff Bengford, the show's director, says the production will assault audiences' senses with its interactive nature and a stage layout of a very different kind.

"We're doing the show in a totally interactive way," Bengford says. "The play happens between, in and around the audience, and sometimes the audience becomes part of the action in certain parts of the show. It's very magical and exciting and vibrant; it's filled with creativity. The characters literally leap off the stage and into the audience throughout the show."

Bengford says the stage layout for Seussical will be very different from what many have seen before. He compares it to a tennis court, with two separate stages that are connected by a runway and sections of the audience sitting on both sides. He also says the show will feature many exciting special effects, including smoke, black lights and bubbles.

"You name it, we've got it," says Bengford, who adds that nearly 100 students are serving as cast, crew and orchestra members. "We're very excited about it."

Performance dates for 'Seussical' are April 1 (sold out), 2, 8, 9, 10, 22 and 23. Ticket information is available at www.WestmontDrama.com.
