Alicia Follmar couldn't have been much busier than she was during Saratoga's recent track and field dual meet against Cupertino.
All Follmar did against the Pioneers was win four individual events, three races and the high jump. Unfortunately for the Saratoga girls, Cupertino captured the March 31 meet, 79-48.
Meanwhile, in the boys division, Hari Iyer and Danny Wallace were double winners in the Falcons' 64-63 triumph, their first in four Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division meets.
Follmar, who had been impressive in outrunning invitational fields on the three previous Saturdays, first won the 1,600-meter run in 5:31. She later won the 800 in 2:16 and 3,200 in 11:45. Somewhere in between stretching, warming up, running the 16 laps in her races and cooling down, the senior star found time to get over to the high jump pit for a first-place leap of 4-8.
Another senior, Amanda Van Hoesen, was a double winner for the Saratoga girls. Van Hoesen flipped the discus 80-0.5 and heaved the shot put 32 feet.
Follmar was coming off a very competitive mile run at the Stanford Invitational on March 26. She won the four-lapper in 4:54.30, nipping the runner-up by .12 of a second and the third-place finisher by .15.
Earlier in the month, Follmar turned back solid competition in the 3,200 at the BellarmineKiwanis Track Classic (11:04.75) and the 3,000 event at the West Valley Relays (10:17.54).
In the boys dual meet against Cupertino, Iyer took first place in the 1,600 (4:41) and 3,200 (10:39), while Wallace claimed meet bests in the high jump (5-6) and shot put (39-11). Juniors Kevin Wong and Ken Douglas also won events for the Falcons. Wong's effort of 114-9 in the discus and Douglas' 2:05 in the 800 helped give the Falcon boys their first dual meet win of the season.
Newberry tosses gem
Junior Scott Newberry fired a 2-hitter against visiting Homestead, helping Saratoga's baseball team earn a split in El Camino Division play last week. An 8-6 defeat to Monta Vista kept the Falcons from moving over the .500 mark in league play.
The Falcons, who took a 4-5 El Camino record into an April 5 game against Gunn, host Santa Clara on April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
Newberry, a 6-foot-3 junior, struck out seven Mustangs and went the distance in the Falcons' 2-1 triumph on March 31. He surrendered a run in the top of the second inning, but blanked Homestead the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, the Falcons scored solo runs in the fourth and sixth to earn their fourth league win. Seniors Adam Sato and Ben Coggins provided most of the offensive punch. Sato singled twice and knocked in a run, and Coggins smacked a pair of doubles.
In Saratoga's loss to Monta Vista, senior Mike Sabes homered and singled, but the Matadors prevailed by scoring twice in the top of the seventh to break a 6-6 tie.
Another Franchi gem
Nikki Franchi, who threw a perfect game against Wilcox in her previous league outing, just missed a no-hitter against Cupertino on March 30. The Saratoga ace struck out 18 Pioneers during her team's 2-0 win and allowed just a double to junior Sophia Tieu.
The Falcons managed just two hits of their own--both by Katie Reed--against Cupertino freshman Kacie Pool. Saratoga scored its first run in the top of the third and added another in the next inning, improving its record to 2-0 in El Camino play and 8-2 overall.
After facing Fremont on April 4, the Falcons will play at Santa Clara on April 6 and at home against Gunn two days later.
Saratoga all-leaguers
Several Saratoga soccer players were honored by the SCVAL coaches recently. Alicia Follmar (Senior of the Year) and Rachel Sabes (Freshman of the Year) earned special awards from the De Anza Division girls coaches. Teammates Suzanne Lessack and Nikki Franchi also were tabbed to the first team.
El Camino Division boys coaches honored Saratoga's Joe Quicke as the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Two of Quicke's teammates, Julien Cramer and Jason Migdoll, also received first team status.
Lynbrook seniors Greg Adams and Tim Nicholas picked up first team recognition in the De Anza boys division. Melissa Ivan and Jessica Ristall, members of Lynbrook's girls squad, were all-El Camino first-team picks.
