It was March Madness Jr. when the Saratoga NJB eighth grade boys All-Net team participated in the Sectional Championships. And just like the big boys at North Carolina and Illinois, the local kids made it to the finals.
But the Saratoga kids did that one better--they defeated Evergreen 50-46 on March 20 to win the NJB version of March Madness and a trip to the national tournament in Los Angeles. That tourney was scheduled for the April 13 weekend.
Saratoga knocked off West San Jose 55-47 in the tournament's quarterfinals on March 12, then upset No. 1 seed Palo Alto 43-39 on March 19 to earn a place in the title game against Evergreen. They won the crown with a four-point win over the boys from the Evergreen area of San Jose.
Members of the team, coached by Frank Calderon and Mike Hartman include Jeff Butler, Stevie Calderon, Austyn Carta-Samuels, Brandon Cottle, Kevin Danser, Max Hooper, Chris Owyang, Ryan Pak and Jamie Turley.
