Springtime tradition returns for Saratoga Lions
By Jennifer McBride
In an event that says springtime as much as baseball and apple blossoms, the Saratoga Lions will host their annual Spring Event on April 10 with a dinner at The Blue Pheasant restaurant in Cupertino.

The night will include live entertainment, featuring Saratoga's own 11-year-old comedy sensation Sarah Kay, and a silent auction that the Lions hope will raise funds that they can then donate to local charities.

Helen Lemmon, president of the Saratoga Lions, says that Sarah's unique and rare brand of clean-cut comedy made her an excellent choice for performing at the Spring Event.

"She brings in a new perspective in comedy--through a child's eyes," says Lemmon.

Sarah has made quite a name for herself with her acting and comic abilities. Her talents have garnered much media attention over the last year, including a special segment on the NBC-11 news, articles in many publications, many sold-out shows at the Blue Rock Shoot on Big Basin Way and an offer to act in the upcoming independent sci-fi film I, The Movie. Sarah's stand-up comedy has proven to be popular for audiences of all ages.

"Sarah is very honored to be a guest at the Lions' annual Spring Event," says Shari Khasrovi, Sarah's mother. "She also donates 20 percent of the money she makes to The Scleroderma Foundation."

Khasrovi says that Sarah also supports many other charitable organizations by turning down payment whenever she performs at fundraising events, including her upcoming performance for the Lions.

An additional performance by a solo singer or singing group may be added to the evening's schedule.

The evening will also feature a silent auction with many items donated by local families and businesses. Last year, the Lions donated to the Southwest YMCA, the Saratoga Library, the Saratoga Little League, the Saratoga Senior Center, local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops, the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center, Hospice of the Valley, the Santa Clara Valley Diabetes Society, the Saratoga Lions Eye Foundation, several scholarships, several school awards and more. The Lions also contributed a significant amount of financial support to victims of December's tsunami in Southeast Asia.

The cost for the event is $35 per person, plus the donation of an item for the silent auction. Suggested donation items include tickets to theater and sporting events; gift certificates from retail stores, restaurants, spas and hair salons; fine wines and champagne; gourmet baskets or trays; jewelry; art; books; crystal; CDs; DVDs; games; and weekend use of a second home.

Attendees can choose from broiled salmon, chicken buona donna and London broil for their main course, and all dinners will include a mixed salad, potatoes or rice, fresh vegetables, French bread, coffee or tea and dessert. There will also be a no-host cocktail bar with wine and other refreshments.

All proceeds from the event will go to Lions-supported local and national charities.
