Him and her Hur lead Falcons to badminton win over Vikes
By Dick Sparrer
The Hur family had plenty to be proud of when the Saratoga badminton challenged Palo Alto in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division match last week.

Kevin and Emily Hur each netted victories to lead the Falcons to a lopsided 37-4 win over the Vikings. The win helped Saratoga improve to 6-1 in the division and to 7-1 for the year.

Kevin Hur, a junior, won 15-8, 15-3 in the No. 1 boys singles match and Emily Hur, a freshman, won 15-1, 15-1 in the No. 1 girls singles bout.

Earlier in the week, the Falcons had cruised to a lopsided 38-3 win over Wilcox in a match played at Saratoga.

Senior Jack Wang won 15-3, 15-5 in the boys No. 1 singles slot in this one and junior team captain Teresa Lin won 15-3, 15-2 in the girls No. 1 singles position. Lin, in her third year of varsity badminton at Saratoga, finished second in the league and third in the Central Coast Section in singles play last year.

Lin shares the captain duties with doubles players Sophia Law, a senior, and Caroline Cherng, a sophomore. Law teams with senior Vicki Liu in the girls No. 1 doubles spot. The two were second in CCS in doubles in 2003 and third in 2004.

Franchi blanks two

Nikki Franchi tossed a couple of shutouts and Chelsey Seagraves, Lisa Brenner and Suzanne Lessack came through with key hits to lead the Saratoga girls softball team to back-to-back wins over Santa Clara and Fremont last week.

The two wins helped the Falcons improve to 4-0 in the El Camino Division and to 10-2 for the year.

Franchi whirled a 1-hit shutout, striking out 16 along the way, to lead the Falcons to a 6-0 win over Fremont. Franchi struck out 16 in the game.

Brenner and Lessack each supported with a single and a double to knock in two runs apiece in the win.

The Falcons took an early lead with a run in the first, then put the game away with two in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

It was a similar story later in the week against Santa Clara. The Falcons came up with three in the third and four in the fifth, then added an insurance run in the sixth. Through it all, Franchi was throwing zeroes against the Bruins.

The right hander flipped a 3-hit shutout this time around to lead the Falcons to an 8-0 victory. Franchi struck out 18 in this one and helped her own cause at the plate with a single, double and triple. Seagraves also had three hits in the win.

Kaiser wins two

Kevin Kaiser won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Saratoga boys tennis team to back-to-back 5-2 wins over Los Altos and Lynbrook last week.

Kaiser won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 in the win over the Eagles and came back with a 6-0, 6-1 in the team victory over the Vikings.

Saratoga is now 7-2 in the De Anza Division.

Douglas, Tang star

Sophomores Ken Douglas and Ken Tang won two events apiece to lead the Saratoga boys track and field team to a 67-59 win over Homestead last week.

Douglas took the 800 meters in 2:07 and the 1,600 in 4:41.44 and Tang won the 110 hurdles in 16.96 and the 300 hurdles in 45.78.

Alicia Follmar won three events, but the Saratoga girls lost a 64-63 heartbreaker to Homestead.

Follmar won the 800 in 2:20.37, the 1,600 in 5:07.38 and the 3,200 in 12:15. Nicole Sabes added a first in the 400 in 1:04 and Brianna Bowen won the long jump at 14-1.

Wheatley three over par

Carl Wheatley fired a three-over par 37 at the Saratoga Country Club to lead the Saratoga golf team to a 202-242 El Camino Division victory over visiting Santa Clara. The win helped the Falcons improve to 10-0-1 in the division. The only mar on their otherwise perfect record is an early season tie against Los Gatos. The Falcons lead the division with the Wildcats second at 8-1-1.

Falcons drop a pair

Saratoga lost a pair of tough El Camino Division baseball decisions last week, both by four runs.

The Falcons lost 4-0 to Gunn to open the week, then fell 12-8 to Santa Clara. The two losses dropped Saratoga to 4-7 in the division and in fifth place in the circuit.

The Falcons were blanked 4-0 by the first-place Titans to open the week. Just two days later they lost 12-9 to the Bruins, despite a big day by Peter Rutti. The senior homered and tripled to drive in two runs for the Falcons.

Saratoga was to break from league action with a Tuesday game at Los
Gatos and will host Santa Cruz on April 16, 2 p.m. The Falcons get back to El Camino Division play on April 19 at Monta Vista, 3:30 p.m.
