Saratoga's Brent Fong and his partner, Scott Juang, lost a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 heartbreaker at No. 1 doubles, but the Falcons still managed to pull out an important 4-3 team win over Los Gatos. The two teams are now tied in the De Anza Division standings with matching 9-2 records.

Construction at the LaRinconada Country Club forced the Los Gatos and Saratoga golf teams to the back nine for the final match of the regular season. But Sean McNamara didn't seem to mind the change in scenery one bit.

The Los Gatos junior fired a one-over par 37 on the back nine to lead the Wildcats to a 198-207 victory over the Falcons, and to the championship in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

With the win, Gatos wrapped up the regular season with a 10-1-1 record, good for the division crown. The Falcons ended up second at 9-2-1.

The Wildcats and Falcons had played to a tie a week earlier at the Saratoga Country Club.

Prior to the final match against the Wildcats, Saratoga had rolled to wins over Milpitas and Lynbrook.

Carl Wheatley fired a two-over par 36 on his home course at the Saratoga Country Club to lead the Falcons to a 193-223 win over Lynbrook.

Ben Stewart was the medalist for the Falcons in a 222-298 win over Milpitas at the Summit Point Golf Course. Stewart finished with a four-over par 40.

Saratoga will now look forward to the SCVAL finals set for May 3-4 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course. Top teams and individuals in that tournament advance to the Central Coast Section tournament.

Kaiser a winner

Kevin Kaiser pulled out a thrilling 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles to lead the Saratoga boys tennis team to a tight 4-3 win over Los Gatos in a crucial match in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.

Kaiser edged Gatos ace Brian Brogan in three sets at the No. 1 to help the Falcons win and pull even with Los Gatos in the standings. Both teams are 9-2 heading into the final week of play.

Jeff Gast won by injury default at No. 2 singles, and Jason Daniel and Eric Lim posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Rohit D'Costa and A. Dev posted a 6-0, 6-2 win ver No. 3 doubles.

Saratoga improved to 15-5 for the year with the victory.

Follmar takes two

Saratoga superstar Alica Follmar won two medals at the rugged Central Coast Section Top 8 track and field meet at Los Gatos last Friday night.

Follmar was second in the 800 meters in 2:13.13 and third in the 400 in 57.05 to lead the Saratoga effort at the meet. Ken Douglas added a 10th in the boys 1,600 meters in 4:35.46 for the Falcons.

Beckie Palm of Prospect ran 11:38.19 to finish 10th in the girls 3,200 meters at the meet.

In a pair of middle school events at the CCS Top 8 meet, Redwood's Katie Nast and Michael Beam each ran to second-place finishes.

Nast was second in the girls mile in 5:29.12 with teammate Amanda Speedy fifth in 5:46.28, and Beam was second in the boys mile in 5:19.41 with teammate Alan Menezes ninth in 5:29.69.

Falcons win two

Saratoga's baseball team put two league wins together for the first time since the Falcons posted back-to-back victories over Lynbrook in early March with consecutive wins last week.

The Falcons edged Gunn 2-1 on a combined 6-hitter by seniors Peter Rutti and Chris Bruner after beating Monta Vista 8-5 on an 8-hitter by junior Scott Newberry earlier in the week.

Newberry went the distance, striking out 10 in the process, to lead Saratoga to the win over the Matadors. Newberry pushed his pitching record to 3-4 with the win.

Rutti was the big man at the plate for the Falcons with two doubles and a home run to knock in four runs.

Saratoga made it two straight when the Falcons beat the Titans later in the week. Junior catcher Matt Wright knocked in both of the Saratoga runs with a single in the fourth.

Rutti had given up a run in the second and trailed until Wright's key hit in the fourth. He handed over the 2-1 lead to Bruner, who finished up to get his first save of the year. Rutti was the winning pitcher, pushing his mound record to 3-4.

Saratoga, now 6-7 in the El Camino Division and 6-10 for the year, will try to make it three straight when the Falcons visit Santa Clara on April 28, 7 p.m.
