An annual rite of spring in Saratoga has been cancelled.
The special spring trash pick-up event, which enabled city residents to dispose of bulky items, has been discontinued due to the city's financial crisis.
John Cherbone, the city's public works director, said that the event was usually scheduled at this time of the year.
"Notices would be sent out in the mail telling residents the date of the garbage pickup," Cherbone said. "On that day, residents could leave almost anything on the curbside."
Cherbone said many families got rid of electronic goods or old furniture during the event.
The city decided to cut the service when last year's budget was prepared. "The garbage disposal company charged us about $50,000 for their services," Cherbone said.
Cathleen Boyer, the city clerk, said that she has been getting a lot of calls from residents who want to know the date of the special garbage spring cleanup day.
"Residents still have the option of calling the garbage disposal company to schedule a pickup. But they will have to pay money for it," Boyer said.
