Phelan takes over as the new exec of the chamber
By Kaustuv Basu
The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director. Kathy Phelan, who has worked with KMVT community television in Mountain View, started her new assignment on May 9.

The position was left open after Kristin Davis left last year to spend more time with her family. Since that time Sheila Arthur, another former executive director, had been managing the Chamber on an interim basis.

Phelan said that she looks forward to working with the city and community to foster a better business climate.

"When I saw the job opening, I knew I had to apply for it," she said. "I grew up in the area. I have very fond memories of Saratoga." She said that she loves the Chamber's major fundraiser, Celebrate Saratoga! and she's taken part in the Great Race many times.

Phelan also has experience working with nonprofits and other community groups.

"I know it's all about people. I will try to reach out to as many people as I can," she said.

Arthur said that the Chamber had received more than 120 applications for the job. "We whittled it down to five. Phelan met all our criteria," she said. "She has experience and has a personable style."

Arthur hopes that Chamber membership will grow in the next few years.

"I'm very happy that we have someone on board. We can now have a meeting to plan Celebrate Saratoga!" said Arthur.

"I am excitedly nervous," Phelan said.
