After two seasons of using single elimination to determine badminton champions, the Central Coast Section returned to its previous format last week--a full double-elimination tournament.
And nobody can be more pleased with the change than two local doubles teams. Monta Vista's Li Jin and David Ng and Saratoga's Sophia Law and Vicky Liu, despite losing early-round matches, were able to work their way back through losers' brackets and earn CCS championships.
Monta Vista's Emmanuel Pun and Saratoga's mixed doubles team of Edward Lin and Theresa Lin also won championships at the three-day event held May 17-19 at Monta Vista.
Jin and Ng, the top seed out of 14 boys doubles teams, were upset in their first match, 15-7, 15-7, by No. 6 Evan Blomquist and Eric Huang of Lynbrook, but won seven matches in a row to claim the title. The last two wins came over Blomquist and Huang, who had won four straight to reach the championship match.
Jin and Ng survived a match point to beat the Lynbrook duo 12-15, 17-15, 17-14 and force a decisive match. In the finale, the Matadors pulled off a 15-10, 10-15, 15-12 decision.
Saratoga's combination of Lin Shen and Chris Yin placed third, while Josh Yang and Jimmy Tang of Lynbrook shared fifth place with a team from Mills of Millbrae.
In girls doubles, Law and Liu--the No. 2 seed--followed a first-round bye with an easy 15-2, 15-5 win over a San Mateo team, then won the first game of their match against Wilcox's Kelly Chu and Alicia Lam. However, the Wilcox unit won the next two games, 15-9 and 15-13, sending Law and Liu to the tough losers' bracket.
Law and Liu first eliminated No. 1 seed Lauren Chu and Carol Chen of Lynbrook, 15-9, 15-3, then gained revenge against Wilcox's Chu and Lam, 12-15, 15-5, 15-8, before claiming the crown with two victories over another Lynbrook pair, Connie Hwang and Amy Chao.
Hwang and Chao, the No. 5 seed, had taken four straight matches, including a 15-11, 13-15, 15-7 decision over their teammates, Chu and Chen, in the second round.
Monta Vista's Pun won the boys singles title for the second year in a row. Just a sophomore, Pun validated his No. 1 seed did not lose a game while beating teammate Jimmy Ip, Michael Cabebe of Independence, Kevin Hur of Saratoga and his cousin, Jonathan Pun of Mills. In the title match, E. Pun won 15-6, 15-5.
Hur, who started the tourney with three victories, finished third. Ip shared fifth place.
Another top seed, the Lins of Saratoga, was barely challenged en route to winning the mixed doubles crown. Two of the Lins' four wins came against Lynbrook's Chris Hsiung and Emily Liu, the No. 3 seed including 15-11, 15-7 in the final match.
Hsiung and Liu won their first three matches, before a 15-13, 15-3 loss to the Lins dropped them into the losers' bracket finale opposite Cupertino's Albert Chow and Alice Wen. Hsiung and Liu won 10-15, 15-9, 15-7, to secure second place. Chow and Wen, who entered the tourney as the No. 14 seed, won five of seven matches and placed third.
Saratoga's Emily Hur placed third in girls singles, thanks to a 13-15, 15-7, 15-7 win over teammate Caroline Cherng in an elimination match. Hur, the No. 6 seed, was ousted in her next match against eventual champion Daphne Ng of El Camino (South San Francisco), 15-6, 15-10. Earlier, after winning her tourney opener, Hur lost to Ng and dropped into the losers' bracket, where she won four straight before losing to Ng again. Hur finished 5-2.
Cherng, the No. 4 seed, won two matches before losing a third-round contest to Ng, 15-2, 15-7. She won a third match before losing to Hur and finishing 3-2.
