City needs to live
within its means
Residents of Saratoga, hold your hats; another tax proposal is coming down the pike.
The city council voted to approve a new ad-hoc committee to study new ways to explore revenue enhancement options: read tax. "This ad-hoc committee should aim to educate the public." This "education" will cost $20,000 to $30,000. How many potholes could be filled with $30,000?
The city of Saratoga must learn to live within its means. I thought maybe the overwhelming defeat of the last proposed utility tax would have sent the message. I guess not.

Repairs vs. North Campus,
What is more important?
Most of your correspondents now entering the long-running debate on North Campus seem to ignore some important facts.
1. The city council told us before the Measure U/V election that a backlog of more than $11 million of "essential road and bridge maintenance" had accumulated because prior councils were not aware of the need to pay for these repairs.
2. During that same period, the council set money aside that was eventually used to buy North Campus.
Now, you the voters have to decide whether you want North Campus or essential road and bridge maintenance. The council has decided that essential road and bridge maintenance is more important, and I agree with them.
Those who think the city should spend money on property speculation or additional facilities should sponsor a ballot measure to raise taxes for this purpose. Meanwhile, let's praise the council for a correct decision.
