Saratoga turns 50 next year, and at its June 1 meeting the city council got the ball rolling for an anniversary celebration to be held in September and October of 2006.
Joan Pisani, the city's recreation director, made a presentation to the council and said the event should be structured in such a way so that it required minimal involvement of city staff.
"It should be an all-volunteer effort," Pisani said. "The city needs to select a chairperson and then start recruiting people for a steering committee. Once a celebration plan is established, a budget should be developed."
Pisani said that events such as Celebrate Saratoga! could be part of the anniversary activities and that a commemoration ceremony at the civic center to honor all former mayors and citizens of the year might be included. Others ideas include a community parade and special displays at the museum.
Lon Saavedra, CEO of Hakone Gardens, said the gardens will be made available for any kind of celebration. "We'll be delighted to help," he said.
Pisani said during the city's 25th anniversary, local clubs and organizations came together and organized an extended two-month celebration.
Mayor Kathleen King suggested the city follow the same model and try to enlist the help of as many community organizations as possible.
"We need to find out how much staff time will be needed for the projects," King said.
At the end of the discussion, the council directed staff to look at different possibilities for the celebration.
Pisani is expected to return to the council with more details.
