North Campus development map is on display at public meeting
By Kaustuv Basu
A day after the Saratoga City Council reaffirmed that it wants to go ahead with plans to sell the North Campus facility, city staff held a meeting at the site to display a tentative development map for the property and solicit comments from the public.

"Usually, when developers are planning something like this, the city encourages them to talk to neighbors and other interested parties. We're doing the same thing," said John Livingstone, the city's community development director.

The proposed map shows that the North Campus property will be divided into nine residential lots around a cul-de-sac. Each lot is about 10,000 square feet.

There are 58 trees on the property now. About 28 will be removed during construction.

Livingstone said houses with floor space up to 3,200 square feet can be built on the lots.

"Adding a basement to the house doesn't add to the floor area," he said.

Bernadette Wiandt, a homeowner who lives nearby, said she was worried that two-story buildings on the property might affect the privacy of her house.

"The campus is on higher ground. So the houses will look down on us," she said. Wiandt said that she was in favor of a sound wall around the property so that noise problems can be mitigated.

Livingstone said that the planning department would take more feedback from the community before deciding on the next course of action. The property is expected to be up for sale in November.
