Gilbert, Burney share coach's honor in West Valley Division
By Bob Scudder
Del Mar dominated the all-league selections in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League just the way the Dons dominated league action with a 16-2 mark and walked away with the championship.

Senior outfielder Joe Blank led the special recognition awards in the division as the Most Valuable Player.

Second-year coach Dale Gilbert was recognized as co-Coach of the Year along with Overfelt's Ray Burney. Gilbert said the award was "quite an honor" and that it was "nice of my colleagues to vote me that honor."

Burney, a graduate of Saratoga High School and a veteran football coach at the school, spends the spring at Overfelt as the head varsity baseball coach. He led the Royals to a 20-5 record overall in 2005 and to a 15-3 record and second-place finish in the West Valley Division.

Pitcher and first baseman Nick Palermo received the Sophomore of the Year award and catcher Jesse Van Sickle was selected as the Freshman of the Year.

The other first team selection for the Dons was sophomore pitcher Nick Bourdens.

Two other Dons were honored with second team selections--sophomore shortstop Ryan Erickson and sophomore infielder Tim Kolstad.

In the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL, Prospect nailed down two of the special recognition awards. Shortstop David Kinder was selected as Junior of the Year and first baseman Curtis Van Waardinverg was Freshman of the Year.

Kinder hit a solid .364 and led the team with 12 RBIs and tied for the lead in home runs with two. He could be counted on to put the ball in play, striking out only five times on the year. He also led the team with six stolen bases.

Van Waardenberg anchored one corner of the infield at first with consistent play and was second on the Panthers with a .396 average. He had a hefty slugging percentage of .500. Five of his 19 hits went for doubles.

The Panthers also saw senior Casey Juull receive a first team all-league selection and junior Nick Nichols was honored with a second team spot. Juull was dependable at his third base spot and led the team at the plate with a .400 average. He also led the team in hits with 22 and showed some pop in his bat knocking out seven doubles and a homer. Nichols also had power at the plate, sending two round trippers over the fence and driving in 11 runs. He scored 15 runs which was second on the team.

Westmont played in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL and finished in the middle of the pack in fourth place but landed three Warriors on the all-league team.

Senior Ryan Magana was a first team selection and made his presence felt on the mound. He compiled a solid 9-2 mark and was very durable, firing seven complete games and going a total of 70 innings. He finished with 57 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.89. "Ryan was a bulldog and wanted the ball every opportunity possible and would do whatever he could to get it," coach John Salberg said.

Second team honors went to Warrior junior D.J. Jackman and senior Brad Davis. Jackman was "a tough competitor and didn't allow anyone to get the competitive edge on him," said Salberg. He blasted four home runs and maintained a .372 average. Davis was a constant presence, catching every inning of every game. He anchored the middle of the batting order with a respectable .331 average and three home runs.
