The Redwood and Cupertino middle school tennis teams matched perfect records on the final day of the Midpeninsula Tennis Patrons Middle School Tennis League season.
A couple of hours later, Redwood was still perfect.
The Griffins pulled out a 6-3 win over Cupertino to wrap up a 9-0 season to clinch their fourth straight league championship.
Team captain Eric Gast got the Griffins off to a solid start with a win in straight sets at No. 1 singles. Redwood won three of the four singles matches contested and won three of five doubles matches to claim the team win.
The No. 1 doubles team of Brian Tang and Brian Tsai teamed for a thrilling victory over the Bears. The Redwood pair opened with a win in the first set, winning 7-6 on a tiebreaker, but lost 6-3 in the second set. The duo battled back with a 7-5 win in the third and deciding set to claim the victory that clinched the team win for the Griffins.
"The team really showed what they were made of on championship day, said first-year coach Nick Saadi. "All their tireless training days had paid off. This team has proven they are number one and they should all be proud of themselves."
"We had a great season and a lot of fun," added the coach. "We look forward to defending our title next year in hopes of keeping the dynasty alive."
The Griffins overcame the adversity of injuries, illness and foul weather to complete an undefeated season that included key win over Fisher Middle School and the Harker Academy.
