A fledgling Independence Day celebration that started in Saratoga two years ago is on its way to becoming an annual event.

Jack Mallory, a former city councilman, has been most noticeable in recent months for his role as chairman of the Citizens Committee to Save the North Campus. He has also been instrumental in ensuring that Saratoga has its own July 4th celebration.

Mallory said he first thought of organizing the event because the city did not have an Independence Day observance.

As in other years, the event this year will be held at Azule Park near Blue Hills Elementary School. Mallory said that the ceremony will held between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Nearly 20 volunteers will help with the event. Volunteers from Pro America Spirit, a nonprofit organization that promotes patriotism, will decorate the park with flags.

"We will be using nearly 100 flags," said Roberta Allen, special programs director for the organization. She said the celebration will have a quaint hometown touch to it.

Mallory will give a welcome address, followed by a speech by the Rev. Ernest Cockrell of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

"This year's special attraction is the Crystal Children's Choir," Mallory said.

Some soldiers as well as veterans are expected to attend the ceremony.

The observance will end with a parade around Azule Park. "Residents can bring their dogs or other pets," Mallory said.

Children who take part in the event will be given ice cream. Last year nearly 400 people celebrated July 4 at Azule Park.

"Residents don't have to go too far to attend it," Mallory said.

Saratoga's Independence Day observance will be held at Azule Park, 12777 Goleta Ave. on July 4 between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Jack Mallory at 408.252.7447 or Mallory58@aol.com.
