John A. Cavers

John Arthur Cavers, 83, a former teacher at Saratoga High School, died on June 15 from complications arising from a stroke.

Cavers was born to Francis and Anna Cavers in Spokane, Wash. He studied English, mathematics and the classics at the University of Washington, earning a master of arts degree.

In the early 1940s, he enlisted in the Army. During World War II, he participated in an expeditionary mission that set the groundwork for invading enemy-held territory in Europe. During this operation, he survived an all-night shelling of his foxhole. After the war, he remained a reserve officer, rising to the rank of major, and also began his teaching career.

Cavers, who spoke five languages, taught Latin, French, English and math to high school students. He was named a Fullbright Scholar and in this position, educated youth from the town of Wavre in the Belgian Congo. Upon returning to the U.S., he taught at Ballard High School, becoming head of the foreign language department and supervising publication of the school newspaper.

In 1968 he began teaching at Saratoga High School as the head of the foreign language department and as a Latin teacher. Cavers believed understanding Latin would give his students a better understanding of their own language and open the door to education and professional opportunities. Even after he retired, he continued teaching as a substitute, until the age of 79.

Cavers often worked three jobs to support his family--teaching, working in the local newspaper's mailroom and performing duties for the Army Reserves.

Cavers is survived by his wife, Barbara Cavers; his daughters, Kathy Fulfer and Molly Cavers; and his son, John Cavers. A memorial service was held on June 24 at St. Joseph's of Cupertino Church. Contributions in his name may be made to the Parkinson's Institute.
