The streak of excellence continues. The Saratoga Little League 11-year-old all-star team has won yet another tournament. After entering the Section 5 tourney at the Quito field, Saratoga walked out with an undefeated record and the title three days later.
Saratoga defeated Aptos two games in a row on July 23 and 25. Saratoga's 11-2 win over Aptos on July 25 earned the all-stars a place in the Division 2 all-star tournament at the Folsom National Little League field.
Saratoga put up a seven spot in the top of the fifth in its championship game with Aptos after entering the inning trailing 2-1.
Troy Doles opened the fifth by reaching on an error by the shortstop and then Mike Lauck ripped a single to left that moved Doles to second. David Eng dropped a nice bunt single to load the bases and Sumner Vogel blasted a base knock into left that scored Doles and advanced the other two runners.
After Aptos brought in a relief pitcher, Colin Johnson crushed a double to the left side that scored both Lauck and Eng and left two runners in scoring position. Neil Bruner broke open the inning with a three-run blast over the left field wall. Kia Fariba followed and reached on another shortstop error and Kai Kirk laid down a bunt single to put two runners on again for 'Toga. Greg Kenter drove in another run with a sacrifice fly before Aptos could end the inning.
Saratoga's bats were wide awake with three players having a multi-hit game. Vogel was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Johnson was 2 for 4 with a double, three driven in and two runs scored and Kirk went 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Bruner's only hit in three at bats was the three-run shot and he also drew one walk. Will Dennis and Lauck each singled and scored runs, and Eng singled, walked and scored twice.
Kirk threw a complete game, allowing only two runs on five hits while striking out five.
Two days earlier, Saratoga faced Aptos for the first time and won 4-2. Once again Aptos took an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the second, but Saratoga scored two in the bottom half of the third to take the lead. Aptos tied it up in the top of the fifth, but Toga scored another two in the bottom of the fifth that eventually was enough for the win.
With one out in the fifth, Bruner blasted a double to left-center. Fariba followed with a single to left that put runners at the corners and Kirk was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kenter reached on a fielder's choice when Bruner was forced out at the plate. With two outs and the bases loaded, Doles belted a single to left that scored both Fariba and Kirk before Aptos got out of the inning.
Saratoga put together 10 hits in the game, with Bruner swinging the big stick. Bruner went 3 for 3 with the two-run homer in the third and the double. Johnson went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Fariba was 2 for 3 with a run scored, Kirk singled and scored a run, Doles singled with two RBIs and Kenter singled.
Saratoga's first game of the tournament pitted the locals against Santa Clara Briarwood, whom they bested 2-1. Like in its other two games in the tournament, Saratoga fell behind early after Briarwood scored a run in the top of the first, but Saratoga answered right back with a run in the bottom of the first. The game was then scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Saratoga scored the go-ahead run.
Saratoga had five hits in the game, with Vogel going 2 for 3 with a run scored and Fariba, Kirk and Dom Guercio each singled. Bruner scored the other run for Saratoga.
Saratoga continued on to the Division 2 all-star tournament. The all-stars fell to Palo Alto 10-0 in their first game on July 28, but then came back to win their second game against Woodcreek 13-0 on July 30. The locals were to face McKinleyville on July 31--the winner would advance to the tournament semifinals.
