The mighty have fallen. It's only a matter of time before any true powerhouse finally ends its streak, and the 11-year-old all-stars from the Saratoga Little League are no exception to that rule.
Saratoga began its run in the local District 12 tournament held at the Los Gatos field and, after winning that tournament without a loss, the locals went on to win at the Section 5 tournament at the Quito field.
After another flawless championship performance, the Saratoga all-stars continued on to Folsom where they tasted defeat for the first time. Losing at the hands of a team from Palo Alto, Saratoga lost a little of its luster but returned with a renewed vigor in the loser's bracket, defeating Woodcreek 13-0. However, despite the new momentum, Saratoga suffered its final loss to Petaluma 2-1.
Saratoga's game against Woodcreek marked one of its most stellar performances throughout its entire run. The game went only four innings, with Kai Kirk and Sumner Vogel splitting the duties on the mound. Kirk allowed only two hits in his three innings atop the hill and struck out one, but his accomplishment lies in the fact that he threw only 20 pitches in three innings.
Vogel came in to close out the game in the top of the fourth and threw only nine pitches.
Between the two, Saratoga was only on defense for a total of 29 pitches in the game, which is an impressive feat in and of itself.
But aside from the outstanding pitching performances, Saratoga also hit the ball pretty well.
Saratoga scored at least two runs in every at-bat against Woodcreek, putting up a five spot in the first, two in the second and then six in the third.
Saratoga really broke away in the third when David Eng singled to right with one out to start the game's biggest rally. Mike Lauck followed with a single to left, putting two runners on. Colin Johnson singled to left to load the bases and Neil Bruner added a single to drive in Eng and keep the bases loaded.
Kia Fariba blasted a double to the left side that drove in both Lauck and Johnson and left Bruner on third. Kirk grounded out to short, but not before Bruner scored and Fariba advanced to third. Greg Kenter drove the ball to left, knocking in Fariba, and Troy Doles drew a walk. With two on, Will Dennis roped a double to left that scored both Kenter and Doles before Woodcreek could end the inning.
The first inning proved to be a quick downfall for Woodcreek when Saratoga scored five runs. Vogel led off with a single to right center and Johnson followed with a single.
Johnson was hot again going 3 for 3, including a solo jack in the top of the second, with three runs scored.
Fariba finished with two hits in two at bats including a double, two runs scored and three driven in.
Dennis drove in three of his own and went 2 for 3 on the day, including a double.
Vogel singled and scored a run, Lauck was 1 for 2 with a run scored, Bruner singled, scored twice and knocked in one, Kenter went 1 for 3, scored twice and had one RBI, Doles was 1 for 2 with a run scored and Eng was 1 for 2 with a run scored.
The Saratoga 11-year-old all-star team included Neil Bruner, Will Dennis, Troy Doles, Georgie Ellenikiotis, David Eng, Kia Fariba, Dominic Guercio, Colin Johnson, Greg Kenter, Kai Kirk, Michael Lauck and Sumner Vogel. The team was managed by Mike Bruner and Bill Bloyd and Bob Johnson were the coaches.
