Drivers beware--schools are back in session
There's a reason the speed limit is 25 mph on Fruitvale Avenue in front of Redwood Middle School--it's a school zone. And children will be walking along Fruitvale and other Saratoga roadways this week as school opens for another year.

Motorists need to drive with caution everywhere in Saratoga, but especially near the many elementary school sites that include Argonaut, Foothill and Saratoga in the Saratoga Union School District, Marshall Lane in the Campbell Union School District, Blue Hills and Christa McAuliffe in the Cupertino Union School District and many other public and private schools.

Children will be present again in each of those locations now that school is back in session. Students will return to the classroom as early as Aug. 25 at some schools, and drivers need to exercise caution around all of the schools in the city, including Saratoga High School on Herriman Avenue.

Speed limits are 25 mph in areas around schools for a reason--to protect our children. And that's an obligation we all share equally.

Superintendent ill

The school year will begin this fall without Dr. Cindy
Ranii at the helm as the superintendent of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District. She is battling the effects of an apparent stroke that has left her paralyzed and hospitalized.

Dr. Ranii had just returned from a vacation in Europe
when she consulted doctors because of back and leg pain. She was hospitalized first at Good Samaritan and then at Stanford, and doctors have yet to determine the cause of her paralysis.

Dr. Ranii has provided true leadership in the district during her eight years as the superintendent. Under her watch the district has experienced great advances in academic achievement and school site improvements.

The hearts and prayers of a grateful community go out to Dr. Ranii. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope to see her back in her superintendent's chair very soon running the operations of Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools.
