17th annual Celebrate Saratoga! will display the city's best side
By Jason Sweeney
Living in Saratoga may be cause enough for celebration, but the 17th annual Celebrate Saratoga! street festival gives residents the time and the place to cut loose on Big Basin Way and celebrate what the city is all about.

"On a day to day basis, Saratoga runs like any other town," Kathy Phelan, executive director of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, said. "This is the one day of the year that the Village and Big Basin Way open their arms to celebrate. We're celebrating all that Saratoga has to offer."

Celebrate Saratoga!, hosted by the chamber, is scheduled for Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Traffic will be blocked off and booths and stages set up the length of the Village.

Celebrate Saratoga! attracts tens of thousands of people each year to listen to live music, dance and sample the wares of Saratoga's upscale restaurants and wineries. Last year, approximately 30,000 people attended. The chamber expects another large crowd this year for its biggest yearly event.

More than 15 food and restaurant booths are expected to set up on Big Basin Way. Local restaurants Bella Saratoga, Sent Sovi restaurant, Mere Michelle restaurant, Viaggio Ristorante and Lupretta's Italian Delicatessen will participate. The Mountain Winery, Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards and the Tomas Fogarty Winery will be among the wineries serving up local tastes of the grape.

Six bands, including the Heartbeats, the West Valley College Jazz Band and the Road Dogs, will perform on six stages.

Children are welcome at the family fun zone. Sarah Kay, an 11-year-old comedienne, will be there. Sarah is from Saratoga and has performed at the Blue Rock Shoot.

"Celebrate Saratoga! gives people an opportunity to experience the Village and Saratoga as a thriving business community," Phelan said. "It's mostly about having fun and sampling what Saratoga has to offer."

The event is organized by volunteers, community members and businesses. Sponsors this year include the Saratoga News, Alain Pinel Realtors, West Valley College and Budweiser. Sponsorships are still available.

"The energy and the attitude and the fun are contagious," Phelan said. "Come down and experience our celebration. You won't be disappointed."
