Coach moves, and Lynbrook gets a new quarterback
By Mike Barnhart
When Darrell Williams took over the Lynbrook football program in the spring of 2004, he began making changes--new uniforms, charter buses to games, a summer conditioning program.

After a difficult 1-9 season last fall, when the Vikings managed more than seven points in just three of their 10 games and were held scoreless in five of them, Williams made another move. He implemented an off-season weight lifting program.

But perhaps the biggest move of all was moving from his home in Almaden Valley into the Lynbrook High community. "I'm just three minutes away from the school now," explained Williams, an "off-campus" coach. "It allows me to be at school two or three times a day. Players can see me at brunch or lunch."

The best part of the coach's move into the Lynbrook attendance area, though, is that he has a school-aged son--a 6-foot-3, 180-pounder who just happens to play quarterback.

Cory Williams, the starting quarterback as a junior at Leland High last fall, will be throwing passes and eluding rushers as a senior for Lynbrook in 2005.

The quarterback's biggest target will be senior tight end Dan Doughty (6-foot-2, 235 pounds), who is on the lists of several college recruiters, according to the coach. The fastest receiver likely will be senior Richard Smith (6-foot, 175), an "exceptional" transfer from Chico. Other pass catchers likely will be senior Rich Perry (6-foot-2, 190) and junior Eric Park (5-foot-10, 175).

"If our line can buy some time for Cory, we will be able to have success passing the ball," Williams said. "But we're kind of rebuilding on the line. We'll be starting four juniors there."

Center Chris Song (5-foot-11, 205) and right guard Ben Shin (6-foot, 235) both were varsity performers last year as sophomores. Left tackle Khoa Dinh (5-foot-10, 235) is the only senior starter in the group. Right tackle Aaron Lessner (5-foot-10, 235) and left guard Zach Fisher (5-foot-11, 220) are the other juniors. Fisher will be holding down the left guard spot, until senior Yereddi Nitin (6-foot, 235) returns from "rehabbing a knee injury," Williams noted.

Matt Kemp, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior who played a lot of wingback as a sophomore, has been switched to tailback. Another returning junior, Mike Hernandez (5-foot-9, 225), will be the starting fullback.

Kemp and Hernandez, along with senior Brian Cramer (6-foot, 185), will spearhead the defense from their linebacker posts. Doughty will key the defensive line, and senior free safety Tony Perez (6-foot, 195) will lead the secondary. Joining Perez in the defensive backfield will be Smith, Perry, junior Andrew Sheng (5-foot-8, 130) and senior Sanho Kim (6-foot-1, 180).

Senior Faulke Verwer (6-foot-1, 210) is set to be the place-kicker.
