They'll be dancin' on Big Basin Way during Celebrate Saratoga!
By Jason Sweeney
The big day is fast approaching. The 17th annual Celebrate Saratoga! street festival is all set for Sept. 17 when Big Basin Way will be closed for another big Saratoga celebration.

Traffic will be blocked off from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. and booths and stages set up the length of the Village. As in years past, Celebrate Saratoga!, sponsored by the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, is expected to draw a big crowd. Revelers will get the chance to listen to live music, dance and sample the wares of Saratoga's upscale restaurants and wineries. Last year, approximately 30,000 people showed up.

Mayor Kathleen King will be there making cotton candy in the Family Fun Kids Zone. King said she knows her stuff after having worked at a cotton candy, ice cream and Icee booth at Great America during college. "I'm quite an expert at making cotton candy," she said. Los Gatos Mayor Mike Wasserman and Monte Sereno Mayor Curtis Wright will also be volunteering at the Kids Zone.

More than 15 food and restaurant booths are expected to be set up on Big Basin Way. Local restaurants Bella Saratoga, Sent Sovi Restaurant, Mere Michelle Restaurant, Viaggio Ristorante and Lupretta's Italian Delicatessen will participate. The Mountain Winery, Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards and the Thomas Fogarty Winery will be among the wineries serving their local product.

Six bands, including the Heartbeats, the West Valley College Jazz Band and the Road Dogs, will perform on six stages.

At the Family Fun Zone, Sarah Kay, an 11-year-old comedian, will perform. Sarah is from Saratoga and has honed her act performing at the Blue Rock Shoot.

"Celebrate Saratoga! gives people an opportunity to experience the Village and Saratoga as a thriving business community," Saratoga Chamber of Commerce executive director Kathy Phelan said. "It's mostly about having fun and sampling what Saratoga has to offer."

The event is organized by volunteers, community members and businesses. Sponsors this year include the Saratoga News, Alain Pinel Realtors, West Valley College and Budweiser.

King hopes residents of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno come over and share a good time with their neighbors in Saratoga, and perhaps catch of glimpse of their own mayors helping out.

"The energy and the attitude and the fun are contagious," Phelan said. "Come down and experience our celebration. You won't be disappointed."
