Sometimes a team can learn more from a loss than from a win, and the Lynbrook football team hopes that's true after dropping its first game of the year to Del Mar, 35-0.
The Vikings ran head first into a tough Del Mar defense last week and were unable to get anything going offensively in the non-league game played under temporary lights at the Dons' field.
Del Mar wrapped up the lopsided win with a safety late the game that was followed by a return for a touchdown on the ensuing kick off.
"The defense was huge today," Del Mar coach Eric Buran said after the game. "We had some mental mistakes, but those are just some first game jitters. It was a great night for the fans."
It was also a great night for a couple of Del Mar running backs.
Emanuel Sellu ran the ball all over the field with 19 carries for 188 yards. Included in that total were runs of 24 and 45 yards.
Though Sellu was the main ball carrier for the Dons, it was Mike Huynh who could boast the most touchdowns. Huynh had two TDs on the night, both of on 5-yard runs.
Del Mar quarterback Todd Myers also got into the act, connecting with Abed Faour on an 11-yard pass for another touchdown. Myers was 6 of 11 for 80 yards and the one score.
Gini Ibe ran in a touchdown from nine yards out for the majority of his 17 yards rushing on five carries.
The other touchdown was scored by Emilio Hernandez who ran back the kick after the safety 56 yards to bring the score to 35-0.
The Del Mar defense worked like a wall, not allowing the Vikings to cross the 50-yard line after early in the first quarter. The Dons held the Vikings to less than 10 yards of total offense. That defense was led by Huynh, who had an interception, and Billy Buxton, who had a fumble recovery that led to a touchdown a few plays later.
Sellu had two tackles, including a sack for a 6-yard loss, Brain Josefowicz had two sacks and Brian Baker had a sack for a loss of seven yards.
Despite being shut out, the Vikings worked hard on defense and came up with some big plays. Kevin Rahbar had five tackles, including a sack for a 4-yard loss and a blocked field goal. Michael Hernandez also was strong on the defensive side of the ball, making six tackles including a sack for a 4-yard loss.
Aaron Lessner led the Lynbrook defense with six tackles, Tony Perez had three tackles and Sanho Kim, Daniel Smith, Rich Perry, Matt Kemp and Naryan Dongre all had two. One of Kemp's tackles was a sack for a 4-yard loss.
The Vikings will now visit Prospect on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers tied Sequoia 21-21 last Friday.
