The Warriors are up to their old tricks. After advancing all the way to the last round of the Central Coast Section play-offs a year ago, the Warriors of Westmont have opened the 2005 football season with yet another victory.
Westmont traveled to San Bruno to play Capuchino on Sept. 10 and won 36-14 after leading 29-0 at the half.
"They made great halftime adjustments," Westmont coach Tony Santos said. "They kept us scoreless in the third quarter."
All members of the team got the opportunity to play for Westmont, which helps get some of the younger players some valuable game experience.
The Warriors ran only 47 plays in the game, compared to the 66 plays run by Capuchino, but Westmont continued to "score quickly," Santos said. "They are a decent team, but we have some great kids."
Chantz Staden was back in his usual good form, carrying the ball 10 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Staden finished the game with more than 250 all-purpose yards.
Kevin Pham did well underneath the center, connecting with receivers on 10 of 19 pass attempts for 139 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also tucked the ball under his arm and ran on seven occasions for another 113 yards. Pham combined his passing yards and rushing yards for 252 total yards on the day.
Staden was the first one to carry the ball across the goal line for the Warriors on a 45-yard-run. Then Pham hit Kelly Peterson on a 10-yard pass for the second touchdown.
Stefan Fowler was the third to score for Westmont when he caught a pass from Pham from 14 yards out.
Ryan Kanzaki caught a 50-yard TD pass from Pham for the fourth score of the game.
Late in the fourth quarter Staden crossed the goal line for the last touchdown for the Warriors from 13 yards out.
"Our inside guys did a great job on defense for us," Santos said.
"We may be ranked by some people, but rankings don't win games," the coach added. "All the ranking does for us right now is validate all of our hard work up until this point."
The defense held Capuchino to only 150 yards of total offense and the Mustangs had one turnover in the game.
Next week the Warriors will host the Scotts Valley Falcons on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. Then they will hit the road to face both Leigh and Lincoln, both of them strong teams. The game against Lincoln marks the opening of the season for Westmont in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and pits two division favorites against one another.
"I could have scheduled an easier preseason," Santos said. "But I wanted to test our skills and challenge these guys. The senior class knows how to win. They have had winning seasons since their freshman year. They won seven games as freshmen, and nine as both sophomores and juniors."
Westmont is not the biggest team in the league, but the Warriors are quick.
"We're looking for another competitive season this year," Santos said.
