Warriors put things together in big win over Leigh
By Kevin Sparrer
The bigger they are, the harder they fall. That was the idea the Westmont Warriors had going into their last preseason game this year against Leigh, whose offensive line averaged 275 pounds to Westmont's 220.

But despite the obvious size difference, the Warriors were the ones still standing at the end, winning 47-13 on Sept. 23.

"We play so well together as a team," said Westmont coach Tony Santos. "It's uncanny the relationship these guys have."

Every single Warrior player found at least some time on the field this past week. Senior Matt Nelson got things off on the right foot for Westmont when he fell on a Leigh fumble on the opening kick off that set the pace for the Warriors.

"They shut us down in the first half," said Santos. "It was a bit of a stalemate." Quarterback Kevin Pham, who set a record for most passing yards in a game the week before, was held to 2 of 7 passes in the first half for only 11 yards and a nine-yard touchdown pass to Chantz Staden.

But even though the Longhorns were able to keep the Westmont offense at bay in the first half, they were not able to keep it up throughout the game. Pham was 5 of 6 in the second half for 102 yards and two touchdowns. One of the touchdowns was a 13-yard pass to Staden and the other was a 25-yard diving catch by Stefan Fowler. Pham has thrown 61 passes thus far this year with eight touchdowns and only one interception.

"They moved the ball on us a little," said Santos. "But they should." Though Leigh did move the ball on the Warriors a little bit, the Westmont defense moved the ball a lot. D-lineman Ben Prevedelli picked off a pass and ran it back 18 yards for the Westmont score.

But Prevedelli wasn't the only Westmont defender to cross the goal line with the ball in his hands. Arthur Esterkin scooped up a Leigh fumble on the Westmont 11 and went 89 yards for another Warrior touchdown.

The other two touchdowns were scored by Kelly Peterson on a 44-yard-run and by Ryan Kanzaki, who caught an eight-yard pass from Bryan Thompson, marking Thompson's first touchdown pass as a varsity player.

"A lot of people got involved in the scoring," said Santos. "We're really excited; we have a great group of kids. They are good people and I love being around them."

Prevedelli, Will Evans and Esterkin all added to the strength of the defense. Esterkin led the defense with 14 tackles.

"Leigh was a big hurdle for us," said Santos. "They were a big test for our team and now we go on to play Lincoln."

In the last two games Westmont has downed Scotts Valley, who won seven games last year, and Leigh, who defeated nine teams. Now they move on to the Lincoln Lions, who won nine games last year and was part of the three-way tie for first place in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with Westmont and Santa Teresa.

Regardless of their record last year, the Lions have been proving themselves this season, scoring 95 points in only two games and allowing only 28. Westmont will travel to Lincoln on Oct. 1, 1:30 p.m., for the game that might turn out to decide the championship in the Santa Teresa Division.
